Oooh baTlaa as my Indori grandpa called em. #MaineAhoy
My first time doing this very @curiousgawker thing of wearing your colors in rival territory. I'm getting more looks of pity than annoyance given this season. 🤣🤣🤣 #MaineAhoy
Just came across the most chill wedding. No one is dressed up. Not even bride and groom. 😍😍😍 #goals
Perfect day to be here at a lighthouse.

Ugh, a desi uncle just spoiled my puffin euphoric mood.
A great thing about being an early riser is when camping, you get the common bathrooms almost completely to yourself. So I was in there, doing my thing, ending with my first shave in 5 days. When uncle walks in. Says hi.
Him - "First time camping?"

(In that ever present desi male tone of seeking opportunities to splain stuff)

Me: No

Him: I asked because no one shaves when camping. That's the charm of it. The scruffy look.

Me: Well, one person has shaved when camping for 20 years.
Him: (genuinely) Who?

Me: Me!

Him: I thought you meant Bear Grylls type.

(At this point, I was ready to let it go. But he wasn't)

Him: But then what is the point of camping man? Stay home and use an electric razor. This is not real roughing it. No offense haan.

A rare delight we experienced thanks to Twitter. Saw dozens of puffins and guillemots so close by in a last minute tour picked at a mutual's suggestion. He said oh you should totally check out this @audubonsociety affiliated tour in New Harbor. So we did. And so so happy!
Long time followers will remember we saw hundreds of puffins in Iceland in 2019 where they went to mate. That was on land. They are skittish on land. Cant get within 100 feet without them fleeing. So have to watch from a distance. This was something else altogether!
Yesterday they were flying within a few feet of us, wading unconcerned about the boat, cos they feel more secure in the water. So close by!
The scientists and the boat captain were amazed at the number of these birds on display. Said most they've seen in years.

A mostly dry country like India will always have trouble becoming a quality distilling powerhouse. Amrut, Paul John etc do a decent job. They are exceptions. You need LOTS of clean water almost all year round to have a thriving distillery scene like here or UK or even Japan.
There are probably more quality distilleries between two NYS Thruway exits upstate than in all of India. Cos so much ridiculous amount of clean water. First time I saw Rondout Creek, I was like lol, this is like ten times the mula mutha and it's just a creek.
India of course, distills a lot of liquor and brews a lot of beer. But it's more of an indulgence and a need than a natural industry. Wines are more natural for us. Sigh, I wish they would legalize mahua wine and let people set up a mahua wine valley.

We've tried a couple of dozen gins from NJ, NY, NE during our pandemic road trips. Really good stuff on par with across the pond. One thing I've noticed is that their bottles are always scotch style corks. British norm is screw top. A couple of interesting business reasons.
One is that most of these NE US gins come from small bold new regional distilleries which distill and sell scotch style whiskey too. Where a cork is the fancy norm. Which has generally led to people associating those corks with "premium" stuff. For pretty much any spirit.
So it makes eminent sense for US local distilleries, which price their wares close to premium, to just put everything in a corked bottle. Even gin, why bother setting up a screwtop line?

Only in India afaik. Rest of the world happily counts them as vegetables. It's one of our most bizarre food hang-ups.
"Because mushrooms are directly in dirty mud" an aunt said.
"Potatoes and carrots grow on tall trees, maveshi?" I asked.
She wouldn't budge. "non-veg" for her.
It's sad cos they are so good for you and so tasty and so cheap and plentiful and sustainable and and and. Our public tho is like nah, we cool with our starchitarian lifestyle.
Oh I know. Heard it very often from desis. When I ask how animals treat potato farms as a living room only, they don't know.

A fascinating untold part of the history of Thanksgiving is that even that happened because of how close minded and puritanical the pilgrims were. They would only eat the stuff they ate in Europe. And if they could grow it here. Not all the bounty already here.
The Wampanoag would look at those fools trying to grow random grain and practically starving themselves instead of eating sooooooo much stuff that was just out there to hunt or gather or even grow and eat. So they nicely went to teach em all that. Bad move in hindsight.
In early tellings of stories of encounters with Europeans, the original people of the northeast often talked about these pale, emaciated, sickly looking smelly people from across the ocean who did not seem to believe in ever bathing or cleaning their teeth.
