So this Mars rock of interest from sol 129 is quite special since it was ran over by the #PerseveranceRover. It was on purpose during a navigation technique and the rover is safe! Here’s a few more facts about rover navigation and this fascinating rock (1/5)
First, the rock by itself is fun to look at, dramatic and almost alien with the textures. Different from its finer grain surroundings. It also looks like the ridges were made by the wheels! But they were already there, and they’re sharper to the hypothetical touch than they look.
Next, this image shows the rover tracks on the top right. That fine grain soil is a little more comparable to the ground that the rover has been traveling on with its auto-navigation software system. Percy is breaking records left and right! mars.nasa.gov/news/8980/nasa…
This pic shows some bright spots where the rover wheel carved out some of the rock on its way over it. Definitely the coolest part of the rock for me so far, since the first time I saw the bright spots I thought something was funky with the cameras (dw, all systems are nominal)!
The mosaic was made with Mastcam-Z left images from sol 129 on COTS software during my free time. A more scientifically accurate mosaic will be released in the future. All frames available to the public at mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/multi…
Also linked in the thread but deserves its own tweet, I cannot get over this headline
TIL that there’s a tiny piece of fabric installed on Ingenuity, the Mars Helicopter, that used to be a part of the original aircraft that the Wright Brothers used all those years ago. #Mars2020#IngenuityHelicopter

This photo is meaningful to my career as a planetary scientist even though I’m not affiliated with this mission in any way, and this is a short thread why. I’m quickly learning how different my experience has been and prob why it’s necessary to yell about it to the internet. 1/9
This photo was taken and released roughly 5 years ago, mid-July 2015. The first time I saw this, I remember pulling up the front page of reddit while waiting at the bank to ask them to forgive an overdraft fee because I was a really, really broke undergrad student. 2/9
I remember reading the reddit comments about what a large team it took to make this photo happen. Hours of planning, tens of people involved from all over the country. “More than 5 people total, got it.” I had no idea what it was like to plan and execute photos like this. 3/9
