I can't relate to a lot of my fellow country people anymore, and the reason for that is not because we speak a different language, or follow a different culture, or live in a different state. It is because our perceived realities are completely different.

The politics of this country has divided us in a way which cannot be undone. At this point in time, I see no possibility of ever being friends with these individuals even if we crossed paths in life because their perception of reality is completely different than mine.

They (the ones I can't relate to) on the other hand seem to have the same opinion about me and many others like me - they think that our reality is warped. I, and many like me, don't like them, and they don't like us. It is a complete breakdown.

We describe each other using similar adjectives. I feel that hate runs in their blood, they also make similar claim about me. I feel especially troubled after the realisation that sometimes I don't feel as much empathy for them. This state of being is disconcerting.

This binary seems to be more prevalent on social media, which is why I spend less and less time here. Unfortunately, I have chosen a field of work where I can't cut myself off from social media. Reducing my social media time has however has helped me feel less angry.

I would rather look at dog and cat videos, than read the thoughts of a fellow human. I know the same is true for many others. Things start feeling hopeless at times, but focusing on work makes it better, at least for me.

I know the above may sound like a rant, but I had to put it out. I feel troubled and extremely sad at what we have become as a country, and thought of escaping this for a better place is increasingly prevalent in my head.

P.S. Those advising me on the bit about 'thought of escape', the admission of a feeling is not equivalent to executing it. I'm not going anywhere, but the thought has crossed my mind.
