The fact that they can and might be willing to carve out the filibuster from topic to topic merely underscores the exact extent to which centrist Democrats do not want to be permitted to act without Republican approval.
Look, if this is what it takes to pass real voting protections, then I'm glad they'll do it ... but what are they going to do about a Supreme Court that is committed to demolishing voting rights?
Why would they require permission from an anti-democracy party on any matter?
Passing as many bills as possible that not only receive no Republican votes, but were designed to receive no Republican votes, crafted with absolutely no Republican input, written to repudiate every single Republican intention, is the best thing this Democratic Congress can do.
Changing as many rules as possible, as ruthlessly as possible, to ensure that no Republican has any effect on anything that happens legislatively, is the 2nd best thing this Democratic Congress can do. No committee assignments, no discussions, no negotiation, nothing.
The Republican Party is anti-democracy. They're committed to demolishing free and fair elections. If this Democratic Congress doesn't treat them as the existential threat to democracy that they are, then this Democratic Congress will have a grim name:
The Last.
You cannot find solutions with people who want the problems.

Republicans really want us to believe Martin Luther King Jr. only ever said one thing, and that one thing is “you can’t criticize white people, because white is a skin color, and acknowledging skin color is the one and only definition of racism.”
Martin Luther King Jr. wasn’t critical race theory, he was critical race praxis, and he was murdered for it, and the Kevin McCarthys of 1968 celebrated joyfully and openly.
White people turning Martin Luther King Jr into their “get out of racism free” card after murdering him is one of the most racist things that’s happened in my life time.
The masses facing the multitude of existential perils caused by greed and income inequality don't find their hope in the sight of a handful of men with wealth as vast as their egos, pissing away all our resources on a race to construct the world's largest private roller coaster.
Attacking Elon Musk isn't "attacking space." It's recognizing that we can address climate collapse, AND care for everyone's basic needs, AND have a regulated space program that exists to benefit everyone, if only we seized 95% of our wealth back from parasites like Elon Musk.
Today’s “supposed to wipe out a certain amount of people” will inevitably lead to tomorrow’s “supposed to wipe out a certain type of people.”
There is no civic, public, moral, or free speech value to what Newsmax is doing, or Fox News, or Trump, or the Republican Party. It’s weaponized language designed for genocide. All should be shut down and prosecuted immediately.
Reminder that before 1/6/21 at the national Capitol was 4/30/20 in Michigan.
This is a pattern, directly abetted by an anti-democracy authoritarian white supremacist Republican Party. They aren't done trying. If Republicans aren't stopped, they'll eventually succeed.
As a society, we desperately need to stop treating as extremist statements expressing the extremity of our danger.
We need to start treating the actual extreme danger as extremist, and take proper action to counter it.
We have a major party politically committed to downfall.
Downfall of representative government. Downfall of democracy. Downfall of the public commons on every level: schooling, parks, public health, housing, safety, environment. Downfall of science. Of knowable fact.
“I hate ‘cancel culture’ in schools, which is why I think we should have nonstop video monitoring of teachers, so we can fire the ones who say the badthink to our white children.”
The anti-wokers have discovered these tweets, and I was going to invite them to remain insanely angry about the threat of hearing uncomfortable truths, but let me assure you they have got it *covered.*
