#Taldíacomohoy, hace 250 años, se fundó la Misión de San Antonio de Padua, en el valle de los Robles, en la actual California. Qué mejor ocasión para recordar su historia con un hilo.

La tradición popular dice que su fundación se debe a que Fray Junípero Serra decidió colgar una campana en un roble para poder llamar a misa, un 14 de Julio de 1771. Desde ese momento comenzó su tarea de evangelizar a los indígenas de la zona.

San Antonio de Padua también fue testigo de la primera boda europea en California entre Juan María Ruiz y Margarita de Cortona, una nativa de la tribu de Salinan.

La misión tuvo un gran éxito en los años posteriores, llegando a alojar a 1.300 nativos en 1805. Sin embargo, cuando México decidió acabar con el sistema de misiones, perdió todo su valor.

Actualmente es muy valorada por los turistas debido a su buena conservación. La iglesia destaca por sus tejas rojizas y los bellos jardines que la rodean. Además, es una parada del camino nacional de Juan Bautista de Anza.

Today is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Mission of San Antonio de Padua, located in the "Valley of the Oaks", in California. It's the perfect occasion to remember its history with a thread.

It is said that, on July 14, 1771, Fray Junipero Serra decided to hang a bell on an oak tree to call to mass, marking its foundation. From that moment on, he began evangelizing the indigenous people of the area.

Archeologists in Mississippi have recently found some metal tools belonging to Hernando De Soto´s expedition to the United States during the XVI century.

At @HispanicCouncil we want to use it as an opportunity to commemorate his legacy.
De Soto reached the West Indies as an explorer under Francisco Pizarro´s conquest of the south of the continent. However, his best-known accomplishment is being the first European to reach the Mississippi river.

As his explorations are of vital importance for the history of Florida, his legacy is copious in the United States. For example, we can see him in this painting, located in the US Capitol Rotunda.

Recientemente se ha conocido el hallazgo en Mississippi de unos artilugios de metal pertenecientes a la expedición realizada por Fernando de Soto en EEUU, durante el siglo XVI.

Desde @TheHispanicCouncil aprovechamos la ocasión para recordar su figura.

De Soto llegó a Las Indias como explorador en la campaña de Francisco Pizarro, dirigiéndose al sur del continente. Sin embargo, su hito más importante fue ser el primer europeo en alcanzar el río Mississippi.

In 1893, 25 years after the birth of the ‘peseta’, the ‘Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre’ was inaugurated in Madrid, as a result of the merger of ‘Casa de la Moneda’ and ‘Fábrica del Sello’.

Although the currencies that have been used in Spain and produced by the FNMT are the ‘peseta’ and the ‘euro’, the use of Spanish coins was widespread in the 17th century in the territories of the current United States.

This week saw yet another attack on U.S. Hispanic heritage, this time in New York. The Department of Education announced that Columbus Day, celebrated for more than 100 years, will be eliminated and replaced by Indigenous Peoples Day.
👉It is one more example of how Hispanic cultural heritage is under attack in the U.S. in recent times. Our mission at The Hispanic Council is to disseminate the Hispanic cultural heritage of the country and to prevent its distortion and manipulation.

#TalDiaComoHoy de 1541 la expedición liderada por el extremeño Hernando de Soto alcanzaba el Río Misisipi, convirtiéndose en el primer europeo que llegaba a este punto. Su gesta está inmortalizada en la cúpula del Capitolio en Washington, D.C.. Aquí te contamos algunos datos:
Este cuadro de Hernando de Soto es obra del pintor William H. Powel y ha sido testigo de muchos momentos históricos de la vida política de Estados Unidos, como el homenaje al senador John McCain, fallecido en 2018 y cuya capilla ardiente se colocó en la rotonda del Capitolio.
En el cuadro, instalado en 1853, puede verse la llegada de De Soto, montado en un caballo blanco y ataviado con las ropas de la época y acompañado por varios soldados que portan el escudo de armas de Carlos I. La expedición es recibida por varios nativos en la orilla del río.
