A year ago today we were outside Elberon Development Group's office, the landlords to CoreCivic at the Elizabeth Detention Ctr, holding a teach-in on the history and current conditions there. We demanded ICE #FreeThemAll@rizzo_pubhistfacebook.com/whitstrub/vide…
The day before this event, but after a great deal of community pressure, Elberon announced that it would be working to end its lease with CoreCivic. #NoBusinessWithICEnjspotlight.com/2020/07/elizab…
ICE responded almost immediately by transferring and deporting one of the named plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Hector Garcia Mendoza. Hector went missing. The part of Mexico he was deported to was known for violence against migrant and deportees. champ.gothamist.com/champ/gothamis…
In @MaryAnnKoruth's own opinon piece, published in the @starledger which links to her much longer article "Essential Until Expendable", she makes it clear that Hector's deportation was a brutal form of retaliation by ICE. nj.com/opinion/2021/0…
What a difference a year makes or in the case of @ECCommissioners, 10 years. That is how long we have been asking them to actively advocate for immigration reform and #ReleasesNotTransfers. Today they publicly released this letter to @SenBooker & @SenatorMenendez
It's been quite a year for changing alliances. Elberon, the landlord for CoreCivic as @MattKatz writes, is arguing in its lawsuit to evict CoreCivic from the EDC. While we still wait on a letter from @SenBooker & @SenMenendez re: #ReleasesNotTransfersgothamist.com/news/ice-jaile…

Answer: Since it opened in 1993, but then it was operated by Esmor. INS found that guards treated people with "capricious cruelty". While the operators have changed, it's still a miserable place that needs to be closed. #ICEOutOfNJ#FreeThemAll#DignityNotDetention
One of the women who was held at the Elizabeth Detention Center in those early years was Fauziya Kassindja who fled her country of Togo to escape a forced marriage and female genital mutilation. She came to the US seeking asylum but was jailed instead. pbs.org/speaktruthtopo…
Fauziya and the 60 other women who were detained there were strip searched and forced to shower within sight of male guards. They were placed in solitary for minor infractions and sometimes chained and shackled.
