#TalDíaComoHoy hace 200 años, se hacía efectiva la entrega a Estados Unidos de la ciudad de Pensacola (Florida), terminando las cesiones planteadas en el tratado de Adams-Onís. Para conmemorarlo, os hemos preparado un hilo al respecto.

El tratado de Adams-Onís surgió como punto final a los intentos de Estados Unidos de comprar Florida. La firma se hizo entre el secretario de Estado, John Quincy Adams, y el ministro representante del rey Felipe VII, Luis de Onís.

España contaba con ceder Florida, ya que el mantenimiento de este territorio se había vuelto muy caro debido a la necesidad constante de colonos y guarniciones. Su objetivo era obtener la soberanía de Texas, creando un territorio unificado.

Por su parte, Estados Unidos obtuvo acceso a importantes puertos en Florida, pudo expandir su territorio hasta llegar a la costa oeste por Oregón y ganó nuevos territorios en Luisiana, así como el derecho de navegación del Mississippi.

Este tratado se percibió como beneficioso para ambas partes pues, mediante concesiones equilibradas, se ponía freno a las tensiones territoriales. Sin embargo, sólo duró 183 días, ya que México se independizó el mismo año que terminaron las cesiones.

Aun así, este pacto mantuvo su legado, pues se establecieron fronteras que siguen aún vigentes. En concreto los límites norte de California, Nevada y parte de Utah, así como el Noreste de Texas.

Today is the 200th anniversary of the cession of the city of Pensacola (Florida). This was the last in a series of concessions agreed under Adams-Onís treaty. To commemorate it, we have prepared a thread about this treaty between Spain and the US.

The Adams-Onís treaty came about as an end to the United States' attempts to buy Florida. It was signed between Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and the Minister representing King Fernando VII, Luis de Onís.

Spain was counting on ceding Florida, since the maintenance of this territory had become too expensive due to the constant need for settlers and garrisons. The Spanish goal was to gain sovereignty over Texas, creating a unified territory.

On a day like today, back in 1769, Fray Junipero Serra founded the first Spanish mission in the current US territory: San Diego de Alcalá, which would give rise to the city of San Diego. But this is not the only mission founded by Serra.

The second mission founded by him was San Carlos Borromeo, in 1770. Nowadays, this church is highly valued for being the only one in California that preserves the original bells and belfry. It is also the burial place of the Saint.

Today is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Mission of San Antonio de Padua, located in the "Valley of the Oaks", in California. It's the perfect occasion to remember its history with a thread.

It is said that, on July 14, 1771, Fray Junipero Serra decided to hang a bell on an oak tree to call to mass, marking its foundation. From that moment on, he began evangelizing the indigenous people of the area.

San Antonio de Padua also witnessed the first European wedding in California between Juan Maria Ruiz and Margarita de Cortona, a native from the Salinan tribe.

La tradición popular dice que su fundación se debe a que Fray Junípero Serra decidió colgar una campana en un roble para poder llamar a misa, un 14 de Julio de 1771. Desde ese momento comenzó su tarea de evangelizar a los indígenas de la zona.

San Antonio de Padua también fue testigo de la primera boda europea en California entre Juan María Ruiz y Margarita de Cortona, una nativa de la tribu de Salinan.

Archeologists in Mississippi have recently found some metal tools belonging to Hernando De Soto´s expedition to the United States during the XVI century.

At @HispanicCouncil we want to use it as an opportunity to commemorate his legacy.
De Soto reached the West Indies as an explorer under Francisco Pizarro´s conquest of the south of the continent. However, his best-known accomplishment is being the first European to reach the Mississippi river.

As his explorations are of vital importance for the history of Florida, his legacy is copious in the United States. For example, we can see him in this painting, located in the US Capitol Rotunda.

Recientemente se ha conocido el hallazgo en Mississippi de unos artilugios de metal pertenecientes a la expedición realizada por Fernando de Soto en EEUU, durante el siglo XVI.
