Thread: The website @ScienceBasedMed came out with yet another hit piece on @AbigailShrier 's book today. As with the prior articles, this one is quite sloppy with the facts. @stevennovella please correct the following error (explained further in this thread):
Author (A J Eckert "(they/them) Connecticut’s first out nonbinary doctor") links to our 2015 piece which examined suicidality data from the 2008 U.S. Transgender Discrimination Survey, the source of the claim that 41% of trans ADULTS attempt suicide.
4thwavenow.com/2015/08/03/the…
Our article focused on the 2014 Williams Institute/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention analysis of the data, which, among other things pointed out that the 41% claim should not be interpreted to mean actual suicide attempts. In their words:
Their point is that a single question about suicidal thoughts is not adequate to ascertain the truth; followup questions are necessary. In our article, we said this *could* mean the actual number of surveyed trans ADULTS who attempted suicide might be closer to 20%. HOWEVER:
(direct quote from our article): "Even if the rate is closer to 20%, that is still unacceptably high. And self harm is a huge problem, whether the actual intent to end one’s life is present or not."

So what did Eckert claim we said in their @ScienceBasedMed article?
Why does @ScienceBasedMed keep letting its authors misquote like this? First, we didn't "claim" anything about TEENS: The 2008 survey polled trans & GNC ADULTS. Second, the "speculative" estimate was derived from analysis by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Third:
Eckert (if they read our article) KNOWS we said 20% would still be "unacceptably high", and the rest of our article--far from dismissing self harm/suicidality--discusses in detail not just the flaws in the survey, but the very serious problem of self harm in trans/GNC people.
The series of sloppy hit pieces recently published by @ScienceBasedMed have been rife with these sorts of errors. We call on editor @stevennovella to correct this and do a lot better at fact checking. If you can do it for anti-vax propaganda, youu can do it for trans issues, too.
For a some more examples of what looks like deliberate misquoting/misrepresentation in these @sciencebasedmed articles, see here:
Here is the 2014 Williams Institute/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention report referenced in our 2015 article and discussed in these tweets.

For years, your site has been the go-to for takedowns of quackery & pseudoscience. But by studiously ignoring the flood of detransitioners, particularly women who regret adolescent transition, you allowed @ScienceBasedMed to fall prey to confirmation bias. Disappointing.
Yes, some people benefit from transition. But your cavalier dismissal of the increase in tween/teen girls not just identifying as trans, but getting double mastectomies & irreversible hormone treatment, along with the voices of women like @lacroicsz & @ImWatson91 is inexcusable.
Are you even aware that several countries have slowed down if not banned underage medical transition? (see: Sweden and Finland) or that a UK High Court ruled in favor of a detransitioner @KLBfax who believes she was unable to give informed consent for the treatment she received?

Transgender certification organization announces workshop on detransition for mental health clinicians. Massive freakout ensues on International Transgender Health FB page.

Read through the thread, & you'll see a common claim: We support detransitioners. Just not like THIS. Not THIS way.

Archived. Because it's "triggering" to even see the announcement of this event on a public Facebook page, the post may disappear soon.

This is a telling comment in the original post: "Warning: Even though this is directed at clinicians, it could trigger rage and dysphoria that may become overwhelming."

Overwhelming rage resulting from...the mere existence of a workshop on detransition? Rage? And then what?

Critically important article.

Trans activists will insist that this overreach by arrogant doctors awash in genderism is merely protecting troubled kids from "abusive parents."

This is the tip of the iceberg--and it's getting worse.

Unethical doctors & social workers work to damage relationships between struggling teens & their parents. Not "affirming" a teen's "gender identity" is all it takes now for a loving mom or dad to be labeled "abusive". Read every word of this article to see how bad it is.
Don't believe this is a problem? At a conference for gender professionals in 2017, multiple MDs & mental health providers discussed how they go about using the courts to overrule parents who hesitate to approve medical intervention for their distressed teens.

You falsely accused me of practicing conversion therapy on my daughter, & in the process attacked @AbigailShrier . When my daughter and I make an obvious joke about it, you tattle to Twitter? This seems unbecoming for a doctor.

See below: via @JuliaDRobertson
The number of times you have defamed and disrespected detransitioners are too many to account. The fact that you clearly can't take a joke from one of the people whose life experience you misused is rather telling.
Here is where Turban asserted that my daughter's CHOICE to go to a horse farm sent my her "back in the closet." Then he goes on to falsely claim I practiced "cruel conversion therapy."

Blue's Clues Pride segment for preschoolers, featuring a trans beaver with mastectomy scars.
And before anyone says, "Nah, you're reading into this" --nope. That's exactly what they are. Image
Here's the whole segment. Resistance fist is an interesting touch on the drag queen's microphone.

Gender surgeon Marci Bowers took to Instagram yesterday to complain hat her interview was relegated to the "overtime" clip on @60Minutes . Bowers, like other trans celebrities, doesn't seem to think detransitioners are important enough to be interviewed by major media outlets.
Not just any gender surgeon, Bowers is WPATH president-elect, a rather important and influential role.
Bowers was one of the surgeons consulted by Jazz Jennings and family.
