(1/7) The future of work is trauma-informed...remember this when you're wondering why corporations will continue to have a full-on talent crisis throughout the near future.

The peddling of the burnout/resilience talk track? It's not working.

A thread🧵👇🏾
(2/7) Offering your employees a week off/marketing about it despite research that shows that 1 week off doesn't address or heal burnout? It's not working.
(3/7) Relying on the thought work of your Gen X/Baby Boomer leaders on the future of work instead of adopting a multi-generational approach given the presence of 4 generations in the workforce, w/Gen Z & Millennials more likely to quit to choose their wellbeing? It's not working.
(4/7) Having your leaders interview celebrities on how they've overcome burnout and had to deal with resilience? Not only is it not relatable/tone deaf but it's not working.
(5/7) What will work will require accountability (especially with middle management), investment in the holistic well-being of employees, more work-life flexibility, not expecting your underrepresented employees to do free emotional labor around DEI ... 👇🏾
(6/7) ... more input from mental health professionals vs celebrities, organization of work around bandwidth vs time, increase in mental health benefits, ditching the 40hr work week, mandated time off, updated bereavement policies, and more.
(7/7) ... or I guess we could just try to "be more resilient," sniff some lavender, and get back to work.

1/I am getting so tired of the level of harm I experience & am told to endure in this industry.

There are 2 yt women who are refusing to pay what they legally owe HmntyCntrd after hiring us (2 women of color) to help their UX startup be more ethical & less harmful. The irony.
2/We even offered an extended payment plan to support them & help ease the financial burden. We're a small business too and believe in supporting one another.

But they said no and are refusing to pay what they legally owe us.
3/Now the attorneys will take care of it & we'll eventually get the funds (and the late fees).

But it's not about the money, it's about the harm...because what hurts is that we earmarked that money for community scholarships & it'll impact folks who need support this year😔

1/ I built @hmntycntrd because I wanted to connect with more people who were curious and hopeful about what's possible within the realm of design. I wanted to connect with other folks who had grown tired and numb to witnessing mainstream design thought leaders debate the ...
2/... same concepts, only to reinforce branded orthodoxies that, at best, lead to the constant repackaging of ideas into books, blogs, and articles and, at worst, a prideful competition for relevance.
3/I wanted to connect with folks who were genuinely interested in being human-centered, who wanted to approach their roles and design in ways that acknowledge privilege, power & design's role in exacerbating injustice.

I wanted to feel less alone and more supported in this work.

1/Early today I tweeted about the lack of Don Norman's understanding of white supremacy & colonization, as reflected in an excerpt from his book. He slid into my DMs wanting to connect to learn more &...well...his patronizing arrogance supports my belief and then some. Receipts👇🏾 Don: Vivianne. 2/Don thinks that the expectation of a Black woman getting paid to help him learn in a “deeper, substantive way” via the emotional labor & expertise required to help him understand white supremacy and colonization in light of the book he’s writing … is funny or insulting🤔 Don: That's very funny. Didn’t even respond to his last message because I don’t waste my time on people who are arrogant and patronizing🤷🏾‍♀️Period. I get numerous requests every week from people who wish to t

(1/13) Has anyone else felt a little off since the beginning of September? Or more anxious, more tired, or more on edge? There's probably a reason for this👇🏾
(2/13) Earlier this week I was having a conversation with @ErinLThomasPhD & we were talking about how we both feel slightly off since we've entered the month of September. "I think it's because my body is remembering the trauma of September 2020," she said.

She's 100% right.
(3/13) There's a lot of research that supports how our bodies quite literally remember #trauma and will store the memories of the physiological experiences in our bodies.

You want to know what was happening in September 2020 in the States?😓

I have time today, so I'll start here: I can tell this piece was written by a White man. While it may be true that what @jjg sees today horrifies him, the reality is that it's ALWAYS been horrifying to UXers from marginalized communities. A brief thread: fastcompany.com/90642462/i-hel…
He shares how the question he hears from leaders is "Where did we go wrong?". Let's be clear on who these leaders are because I doubt that most UXers who aren't White, abled-bodied, cisgender etc are asking this question over and over again...as a Black woman, Im not asking this.
Linda Linda, do you here leaders like @NancyDouyon @acarrolldesign @KristyT @katholmes @intrepidleeloo @albanvillamil @EricaJoy @SekaiFarai @iThink_iDesign and others from marginalized communities/backgrounds constantly asking the question, "Where did we go wrong?" .... nah lol

(1/8) Im healing & building a community at the same time. How am I focusing on scaling @hmntycntrd this year? Im not. Im focusing on how to provide better value, experiences, & content to folks, internal infrastructure/processes & making sure my team is able to thrive & breathe.
(2/8) I want to build something that lasts & I’m okay doing it on a different timeline than what scarcity culture demands of us. I remind my team often that we’re people and purpose driven first.
(3/8) So while we could add an extra live cohort or two this year & make more, that’s not the goal or point of @hmntycntrd. We’re about community care: across our team, the HmntyCntrd community & beyond.
