A bullet went thru my living room. A 🧵 about gun violence
The intelligent and badass @MarieCWalters matched into a competitive EM residency in a big Midwest city. I’m still working from home doing ped surg research so I was excited to move with her to this new town. We like living close to work, for us that means
We usually live near academic hospitals. Multiple people warned us about this neighborhood but we’ve lived in similar areas without issue. Found a recently flipped house 5 min from her main hospital of work. Fast forward to last week. We pick up the girls from daycare and
We go get food. While we were gone, a stray bullet went into the front of our home, thru our living room, blasted thru our banister, in landed in our wall.
This brings up 2 issues. First, gun violence. I’ve seen it first hand in the trauma bay and at it’s worst during the Dayton shooting. Guns don’t discriminate and with worse luck, they could’ve taken my life. Second,
Some of the finest academic institutions in the country don’t take care of their own neighborhoods. Socioeconomic status is tied to health is tied to geography. On top of that:
We are fortunate/privileged enough to move immediately and with the help of friends and family, we can continue to work and eat. Many of our patients don’t have that luxury. They have to stay and live in fear in the back of their home as my own neighbors explained to me.
We are ok. Our family is ok. Our neighbors are ok. But. I have never been more emboldened to do better by my future patients than I do now. #thisisourlane
