Here, I would like to propose a #CovidCommission - a multidisciplinary committee to devise and contract the work needed. /2
A significant step forward, would be to develop a preliminary list of perhaps 10 of the sorts of advances that could be commissioned, to determine the sorts of skills needed for a #CovidCommission, and the nature of support that work would need. /3
At this point, what I am seeking is proposed advances in public health, engineering, architecture, humanities, arts - any area of human endeavour that can make living in a world with COVID, not just safe but, a better world. #CovidCommission /4
For example: Economic replacement/modification of HVACS in tower blocks to provide safe airflows; The design and manufacture of portable stand-alone HEPA air scrubbers suitable for use in class rooms; Adaption of lateral flow assays to provide COVID alarm systems; /5
Application of online-at home COVID testing; Modification of wastewater piping in apartment blocks to prevent toilet plumes; Improved facemask designs for public use, and their certification; Development of air curtains to replace plexiglass shielding in retail locations; /6
What I am asking you to think about is what you think could make our communities safer in a future with COVID. Tiny House communities for the homeless? Virtual barriers around sporting venues to prevent pinch points? What would make your life better? #CovidCommission

Prahran Market has just been made aware by the DHHS that a confirmed COVID-positive shopper visited the market on Saturday the 17th of July between 9.40 am and 11.15 am. /2
DHHS advises that the customer visited a number of traders including Pete n Rosie’s Deli, Q le Baker, Prahran Seafoods, John Cester’s Poultry and Game, Gary’s Quality Meats, Reliable Fruit and Veg and Market Lane Coffee. /3
Due to the broad geographic spread of the traders, DHHS has taken the step of classifying the whole of Prahran Market a Tier 1 exposure site. /4
From Saturday Paper (link in thread): Before Sydney’s outbreak of the Delta variant, NSW Health approached Qantas and offered to provide vaccinations for all its staff.
This offer was made not just for those flying internationally or directly connected to border and quarantine operations, but accountants, commercial teams, loyalty program managers and communications staff.
Every back-office employee could be vaccinated, even if aged under 40 – a cohort not yet eligible under national guidelines.
Hello lockdown, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again.
Because a virus softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain,
Still remains,
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walk alone,
Melbourne's streets of cobblestone.
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp,
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light,
That split the night,
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light, I saw,
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without being masked,
People marching without being asked,
People claiming rights that don't exist,
Yet they persist, and
Disturb the sound of silence.
COVID in NSW, Chaos and Strange Attractors (a stupidly long thread)
Chaos theory is a branch of mathematics focusing on the study of dynamic systems governed by deterministic laws involving feedback loops that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. /2
This sensitivity to initial conditions generates deterministic but apparently random systems. This behaviour is known as deterministic chaos. Chaotic systems are characterised by a set or field of initial conditions that can result in wildly oscillating behaviour. /3
In many cases chaotic behaviour is found only in a subset of these initial conditions as the field includes an attractor, a region of stability to which a large set of initial conditions eventually converge. /4
So let's talk about Skeeter's four finger plan: 1st finger - that's nothing; it's more of the same. Let's skip for a minute to 4th finger, because if that isn't possible, then the two in between need to be considered on their own merits, not as a means to an end. /2
4th finger: "A complete return to normal life with quarantine-free travel for all those who are vaccinated, and no lockdowns or border closures remaining." Issue 1 is that about 5% of people can't be effectively vaccinated primarily due to health issues. /3
Issue 2 is that he has no intention of vaccinating people under the age of 16 - That's a little under 25% of the population. Issue 3 is that AZ has an efficacy of about 70% and it has been designated for use in 20% of the population - so another 2% not covered. /4
A letter to NSW from VIC. Hi guys. The situation you are in is a challenge, but it isn't one that you can't rise to, master, and move on. Yes, your Premier is a self promoting twit. It kind of doesn't matter, because you, the people of NSW, can stop COVID in its tracks. /2
All you have to do, is stay home. Keep your home well ventilated - it might be a bit chilly, but that's okay. Catch some exercise each day - especially if the sun is shining. Compress shopping to one trip/week if you can, and use QR codes. /3
Make this time at home a special time. If you are being bullied at work, you are free from those bastards now. If you have a long commute, you now have 3 hours/day more time for yourself. Reconnect with your spouse. Cook wonderful meals. Have a nice drink. /4
