I first got involved in this “foreign-funding” business almost a decade ago, as an outsider to the environmental movement.

Because it was an alarming attack on science and our civil liberties.

These terrible things were being said by our own government about some of the world’s pre-eminent scientific granting bodies.

Being accused of money-laundering and nurturing terrorism.

As a Canadian I found this profoundly embarrassing, but also foreboding.

All these attacks were based on rumours and innuendo.

Tides Canada was never called to any parliamentary committee to explain what it does and how it operates.

The Harper government not only allowed, it orchestrated the open vilification of environmentalists.

Then came the CRA audits, the talk radio attacks.

Remember when Vic Toews listed eco-terrorism as a major threat?

Jason Kenney’s minions went out and co-founded Ethical Oil—now replaced by Rebel Media.

It was—to me—an open/brazen attack on science and democratic principles.

The entire object of this exercise was to vilify, discredit, and intimidate dissenters.

To silence them. And few outside the enviro movement saw any broader implications.

I was alarmed that a Cdn government could do that with impunity in plain view.

We are all watching this happen south of our border.

But we are now out of time on climate.

The activists were right all along. The reality will be worse than anything we’ve imagined.

There is no economy, no future without climate action today.
