Three members of the Texas House democrats in DC are testifying before a House Oversight Committee subcommittee starting now — their work on the Hill has been somewhat sidelined by the focus on infrastructure & COVID-19 within their ranks c-span.org/video/?513778-…
.@Senfronia4Texas had a powerful opening statement, said this in response to @PeteSessions criticizing the Dems for leaving: "You're damn right I left Texas. And I'm glad I did. And you know why, Pete? I left Texas to give my people a right to vote without being infringed upon."
And directed to his Dem colleagues: "It's time to come home. Enough is enough. You've had your fun. This legislation has been negotiated in good faith and deserves your attention."
@Senfronia4Texas@PeteSessions@travisfortexas Clardy argues HB 3 expands early voting, does not enable voter intimidation by election observers, emphasizes it now allows for absentee ballot curing, says it doesn't limit voter assistance, and clarifies that it bans drive-thru but not curbside voting (two diff things in TX)
@Senfronia4Texas@PeteSessions@travisfortexas .@DiegoBernalTX just gave detailed, in-depth explanations/hypotheticals of how he believes provisions in HB3 would impose more administrative barriers to the voting process, particularly new requirements for those assisting voters and expansions of poll watcher access
.@NancyMace speaking now, says she “appreciates” Rep. Thompson’s testimony and “applauds” her service in the TX House. Also emphasizes her votes to remove confederate statues/busts
Mace is questioning Rep. Thompson about all the things you need an ID for in Texas and appears to throw some subtle shade at TX Dems flying to DC on a chartered plane: “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never flown on one.”
Mace came to this hearing prepared with lots of stats on voter turnout stats in Texas and stats on polling data for support of voter ID laws
Response to Mace’s line of questioning from a Dem lawmaker:
to be clear, Texas already requires a photo ID for in-person voting. The bills under consideration in the TX special session would require voters to provide a drivers license/ID/last 4 digits of a social security # to apply for an absentee ballot
.@RepFranklin told TX Dem witnesses that House Rs are in the minority but "we don't act like a bunch of spoiled cowards running away."
Says "the media and their liberal buddies are trying to paint you as heroes, but you're not." Tells them to fly back to Texas "in coach"
.@NicoleCollier95 just said that if, Texas has drive-thru vaccinations and should continue to allow drive-thru voting too. Says drive thru voting could help stop the delta variant from spreading
A back and forth just now between @Senfronia4Texas and @RepDonaldsPress, who pressed Thompson on why she didn’t file a complaint when she described seeing a Proud Boy at her polling location. Thompson said it’s not realistic for Black voters to be expected to file a complaint
Rep. Donalds struggling to find something in House Bill 3 and remarking that he should have dog eared it is deeply relatable
@NicoleCollier95@RepDonaldsPress@JessicaHuseman In response to my Q in post-hearing presser, @Senfronia4Texas said the most essential voting protection to her is restoring VRA preclearance & making it retroactive by 5 yrs @NicoleCollier95 thinks preclearance should apply to all 50 states, based on historical & current factors

The day after a gripping, emotional January 6 hearing, two 2020 election officials detailed to Congress the threats they faced for defending the 2020 results closer to home
@Adrian_Fontes Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey recalled, after disruption during ballot counting & harassing phone calls/texts over the election, being threatened by a man in her own neighborhood to which she responded: "I have COVID-19 and I'll spit on you." businessinsider.com/election-offic…
@Adrian_Fontes "If it weren't for the work of local election officials, none of you would be here in this room," Winfrey said. The witnesses advocated for HR 4064, which would bar local officials from being fired w/o cause & add more protections against threats businessinsider.com/election-offic…
Good afternoon from the House administration committee, where, in non-infrastructure news, a hearing on election subversion is kicking off
Committee chairwoman @RepZoeLofgren kicking off her opening statement discussing increased threats against election officials, says they've been "failed" by political leaders
@RepZoeLofgren After a brief back-and-forth with Lofgren over the scheduling for this hearing, ranking member @RodneyDavis is speaking now, criticizing Dems: "there's a lot of election misinformation going on right now, and it's coming from the other side of the aisle'
USCP Sgt. Aquilino Gonnell, who came to the US from the Dominican Republic in 1992, says he was the first in his family to graduate college, join the Army, and became a police officer: “I’ve always taken my oath seriously. On January 6, 2021, I fulfilled my oath once more.”
Gonnell says he was more afraid on Jan. 6th than he was during his entire deployment in Iraq in the army
Sgt. Gonnell says it was clear to him that many of the rioters had military/law enforcement training
.@SpeakerPelosi addressing the failed Jan. 6 commission in her weekly presser, saying it failed "Even though it was bipartisan and yielded to the Republicans on many points to be bipartisan"
@SpeakerPelosi Pelosi on the select committee: "We will get to the truth on this and we will not let their antics stand in the way of this"
@SpeakerPelosi Pelosi just reiterated support for HR1/S1, this time focusing on the ethics reform aspect of it
Just 40% of *healthcare workers* in Arkansas are vaccinated, per @SharonLNYT. The state legislature passed a law banning state/local workplaces from requiring COVID vaccination as a condition of employment until 2 years after vaccines get full FDA approval nytimes.com/2021/07/17/us/…
“Young, pregnant coronavirus patients were once rare at the hospital. But recently, four or five of them ended up in intensive care. Three were treated with a machine called ECMO…a step some consider a last resort after ventilators fail” nytimes.com/2021/07/17/us/…
Three unvaccinated women, 62, 68, and 74, all ended up in an Arkansas hospital with COVID. “Yet despite their ordeals, none of them changed their minds about getting vaccinated. ‘It’s just too new,’ Mrs. Billigmeier said. ‘It is like an experiment.’” nytimes.com/2021/07/17/us/…
Texas Democrats are in the national spotlight for fleeing their state to block the passage of proposed election reform laws. Here's a quick breakdown of what's actually in the two bills, House Bill 3 and Senate Bill 1, that Democrats walked out over: businessinsider.com/why-did-texas-…
Key points from both bills:
• New, defined hours for early voting (which also ban 24 hr voting)
• Bans drive-thru voting
• Expanded pollwatcher access
• ID # required on absentee ballots
• Allows voters to fix signature issues on absentee ballots businessinsider.com/why-did-texas-…
Democrats won some key concessions from the previous walkout over election bill SB 7: provisions limiting Sunday voting hrs & making it easier to overturn some elections are gone, and HB 3 includes absentee ballot curing and a provision addressing the prosecution of Crystal Mason
