Meanwhile on the National Mall, Tribal leaders + activists about to present @SecDebHaaland with a totem pole carved by Lummi Nation carvers, as a gift to Biden to urge his immediate protection of sacred sites.

Brenda Mallory of the WH Council of Enviro Quality speaking now.
Also here: Obama's former Interior Secretary Sally Jewell + Hawaiian Dem Rep. Kahele.
Sec. Deb Haaland is about to speak.

She's wearing a mask with a red handprint across her mouth, a symbol of the horrific but still mostly invisible crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
People swarming Sec. Haaland like she's a rockstar out here, asking for photos, giving her presents.
This totem pole being presented to Haaland/Biden has come a long way to be here. Organizers of this event brought it here after stops at sacred Indigenous sites all over the country that are at risk from infrastructure projects and resource extraction.
An incredible amount of gratitude here for Haaland's actions so far, like her probe into the US govt's legacy of forcing Native children into horrific residential boarding schools.

"I never thought I'd see this day," says one of speaker, becoming emotional. "I lost a brother."
More on Haaland's effort here.

The Interior Dept will review past boarding schools and sites, the location of known and possible burial sites near schools + the identities and tribal affiliations of children forced there.

Yes, burial sites at school.
huffpost.com/entry/deb-haal…
All the stops this totem pole made around the country before being delivered to Haaland:

Snake River
Bears Ears
Chaco Canyon
Grand Canyon
Black Hills
Missouri River
Standing Rock
Line 3 in Minnesota
Line 5 in Michigan
Isn't this a good picture? I'm very pleased with portrait mode.
Tribal leaders and activists at this ceremony are saying lots of positive things about Biden and Haaland, but also they are ready to see Biden restore protections that Trump gutted for sacred sites like Bears Ears.

"We're just here waiting patiently to hear from our president."
"Mr. Biden, recognize us," says another speaker. "And help us to restore Bears Ears."

"It's for all of us. It's not only for Indigenous people. It's for all of us."
Still wild to me to see so much enthusiasm for an Interior Secretary. I get why, but can you imagine someone making a beautiful print like this to help confirm Ryan Zinke? (No.)
Where is this totem pole going to live? It's a present to Biden.

I am told it weighs ~5,000 lbs and is 24.5 feet long.

Good morning!

House Republican leaders Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise + Elise Stefanik -- all of whom voted to overturn the presidential election based on a lie that fueled an insurrection at the US Capitol -- are holding a press event to discuss "the failed leadership" of Biden.
I do not think these Republican leaders who voted to overturn the presidential election + spread a lie that fueled a deadly insurrection realize the irony of hosting a press event with a sign that reads "Country in Crisis."
Kevin McCarthy declares the "country is in crisis" and then begins complaining about ... having to wear masks.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are moving forward with more of Biden's judicial nominees this morning.

Five are getting their confirmation hearing. 1 appeals court nominees, 4 district court nominees.
Today's appeals court nominee, Toby Heytens, is a law professor at UVA and currently the solicitor general of Virginia. He's up for a seat on the 4th Circuit.

He also previously clerked for RBG on the Supreme Court.
Sen. Kennedy is asking Heytens about "penumbras" in the Constitution.

"Are there other penumbras that we can't see?"

"Do you think there are other penumbras out there, lurking out there, that we can't see?"

Heytens: "I'm not sure I think there are other penumbras out there."

I think you can watch it online here, but there's no livestream going yet. c-span.org/video/?513434-…

In call with reporters, Rep. Adam Schiff says there will be new video footage from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack presented when the Jan. 6 House committee holds its first hearing on Tuesday.
These videos will "include depictions of violence," so be prepared if you tune in, warns a committee aide.
Some of the Jan. 6 video footage will be familiar to Hill reporters, says Schiff.

"For the viewing public, most of it is going to be new."

Good day! 🥂

Sen. Josh Hawley, who voted to overturn the presidential election + raised his fist in solidarity with white supremacists just before they attacked the Capitol to stop Joe Biden from becoming prez, just introduced a bill about loving America. huffpost.com/entry/josh-haw…
Hawley says his new bill, called the Love America Act, would "promote patriotism in education" by barring federal $ to any public schools that teach students about how racism or white supremacy played a role in the founding of America.

This is better known as whitewashing.
Hawley's bill, which is not going anywhere, would also require schools that receive federal $ to ensure that students can read and recite portions of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution + the Pledge of Allegiance.

So would that include the 3/5 clause or...?
