1/ WaPo: "The delta variant of the coronavirus spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal Federal health document"

washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07…
2/ Chickenpox spreads as easily as measles, because both are airborne. E.g. this paper for chickenpox:

nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
3/ Early in the pandemic, @WHO & @CDCgov experts explained that COVID could not be airborne because it was much less contagious than measles (e.g. aricjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…)

The Delta variant has shown that argument to be complete BS, as we have been arguing for more than a year.
4/ A reminder of the overwhelming evidence, summarized in our publication in @TheLancet, that airborne is the predominant mode of transmission of SARS-CoV-2:

5/ And the argument of the lower contagiousness ruling out airborne was always flawed.

We know that pulmonary tuberculosis is ONLY airborne, yet it is less contagious than COVID.

medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
6/ For pulmonary tuberculosis:

- there is no vaccine that prevents transmission
- most of us don't have immunity
- the pathogen is out there
- transmission is only airborne

And yet, we are not in a fast spreading pandemic.
7/ in summary, airborne doesn't mean very highly transmissible.

But very highly transmissible like chickenpox, as the US Federal government is now describing the Delta variant, can only be explained by airborne transmission.
8/ Let's hope @WHO and @CDCgov start explaining transmission much more clearly than until now ("like smoke") and start forcefully recommending the real precautions that are needed for this highly transmissible virus

1/ Measuring #covidCO2 around the Western US during a long road trip.

Gas station shops ~1200-2000 ppm, even though not too many people. Only see AC, no real ventilation typically.
2/ Stayed at a hotel in Wyoming. Asked for exterior rooms, but none available when arrived after 11 hr drive.

Concerning: 800 ppm in room when we entered. 2500 when we woke up. Had fan on all night, but no real ventilation.
3/ @CDCgov recommends keeping CO2 in shared air under 800 ppm... Clearly it is a big problem in many places, requiring serious work.

Unfortunately it is likely that nothing will be done is most places in the absence of a mandate. Worries me with #deltacovid

1/ DONATION of CO2 METERS to SOUTHEAST ASIA

I am helping @zerocovidthai in this campaign. If you live in SE Asia and are interested in receiving a CO2 meter, please fill this form:

With generous donations and discounts from @AranetIoT
2/ In short, CO2 is an indicator of how much exhaled air (and thus potentially virus) is present in indoor air.

Portable CO2 meters allow us to identify poorly ventilated spaces, and improve ventilation (e.g. adjust windows, esp. important if outdoors is hot or cold)
3/ The linked thread has an extensive explanation and links to other documents and scientific papers:

1/ NEW CAMPAIGN: I'M HELPING @zerocovidthai (with generous support from @AranetloT) to DONATE CO2 METERS to SOUTHEAST ASIA

COVID-19 is mostly transmitted through the air, by breathing in infectious aerosols, in close proximity or in shared room air (thelancet.com/journals/lance…) Image
2/ For that reason, this is an indoor-dominated pandemic. It is much easier to be infected indoors than outdoors (academic.oup.com/jid/article/22…).

The best infection prevention strategy is do everything that you can outdoors
3/ But we have to go indoors at times.

Measuring the virus in the air is difficult, slow, and expensive.

CO2 indoors marks the presence of exhaled air, and serves as a proxy for the virus (cartoon from @numeroteca)
