In India, it is quite common to hang lemon tied along with seven chilies at the entrance of a door, in front of our vehicles, inside our cars.
But do y'all know the reason behind it?
There are two beliefs a Religious/Spiritual and a Scientific Belief.

According to legends, Lakshmi the goddess of wellness & prosperity, has a twin sister named Alakshmi. She goes together with lakshmi wherever she goes.
Contrary to Lakshmi, Alakshmi brings poverty and misery. So it's a natural thing that people want Lakshmi to enter their house, but not Alakshmi.
Seven green chilies and a lemon tied on a thread and hung outside the door are believed to ward off the evil eye of Alakshmi.
People also change the old with the new one on certain days.
Also Lakshmi likes sweets & similar dishes. That's why in every Indian festival, sweets are definitely a part of the menu.
However, Alakshmi likes sour and pungent things.
So, people put lemon and chillies hanging outside their house. So, when Alakshmi comes, She gets satisfied at the door itself and she doesn't enter the house.

In the olden times, the technology wasn't that advanced so pesticides weren't available. So, our Ancestors invented this insecticide from Lemon & Chilli. They used to put it on doors of their shops/homes to keep away the mosquitoes & insects.
As Lemon & Chilli are very rich in vitamin C and charcoal is a natural odor absorber. So when the lemon and chilli were pierced by a cotton thread, the fluid (i.e. acid from the lemon ) stick all over the thread and the smell of it gets spread into the air. This smell helps to +
+ repeal the mosquito & fly to enter into shops/homes. Chilli too acts as germ-killer when hung outside.
The combination of lemon juice & green chili can also work as a great disinfectant, it can terminate so many small microbes and bacteriaโs that are not good for our health.
Reason behind hanging of lemon and chilli on vehicles:
As the technology was not advanced, paths too were full of trees and dirt. People used to hang this combination in front of their Bullock carts. While traveling from this type of areas, there might be a risk of snake bites +
and other venomous creatureโs sting so in such case lemon and chilli were used to check whether the bite was venomous or not by tasting it.
Taste buds of a person doesnโt work after a venomous sting as his nerves would get paralyzed. So if the taste buds feel the sour or spicy +
+ taste of lemon and chilli that means the bite was not venomous & your taste buds are functional. But if the taste buds canโt sense the difference in taste so this indicates that the bite was venomous which helps people in knowing if they need immediate medication or not.
