The #OH11 special primary is 4 days from today, so time for a 🧵

Back on July 1, I met with @ShontelMBrown in her Cleveland campaign office for a 20-min interview.

In this thread, I'll walk through the transcript.

You can watch the video version here ⤵️
spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/po…
Most pressing issue facing #OH11?

@ShontelMBrown says pandemic recovery and gun violence.

What qualifies her to address them?

She says her experience as a Cuyahoga County Council member.
If elected, what would legislative priority #1 be?

@ShontelMBrown says expanding the public option under the Affordable Care Act, which she says is "the most immediate and effective way to get to that place of universal health care."
Does @ShontelMBrown view her race against @ninaturner as establishment vs. outsider, like the national media narrative says?

"People are very clear about who's been here and who's been getting things done. And that is what the narrative ought to be," she told me.
Does @ShontelMBrown think the national support she's receiving from @HillaryClinton, @ClyburnSC06 and others will help?

Yes, "but I think the ones that probably...resonate with the people here...[are the]...over 100 local elected officials that have endorsed my candidacy."
How does @ShontelMBrown gauge how progressive #OH11 currently is, as @ninaturner campaigns to the left of her?

"...to say that one of us is more or less progressive than the other is really, I think, more about the labels than the actual work that we've been doing."
What does @ShontelMBrown say to #OH11 constituents who may question her incremental approach to policymaking, instead of thinking bigger?

"All or nothing, you usually end up with nothing. You have to find ways to compromise or we end up with nothing at all.”
Toughest part of the campaign so far?

@ShontelMBrown told me fundraising at a national level.

"I raise money every year for the [county] party, so this is not foreign territory. It's just the level and the amount of time that it takes, to again, to be competitive."
While former #OH11 Rep. @mlfudge can't endorse in the race because of her current job, her mother is backing @ShontelMBrown.

Brown told me she fully embraces carrying on the legacy Fudge and the late Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Louis Stokes created while representing the district.
#OH11 includes the city of Akron and other parts of Summit County, but residents there have often felt a lack of representation in the Cleveland-anchored district.

I asked @ShontelMBrown how she would approach making Summit County residents feel fairly represented.
Apologies, again, for those who were waiting for this thread for the last two days...the Hill has been keeping me busy, so I appreciate your patience!

The #OH11 special primary is next Tuesday, August 3.

According to a statement received by our @SpectrumNews1OH newsroom, City Hall in Springfield, Ohio, has been evacuated this morning due to a bomb threat.

This is the community former President Trump spoke about in Tuesday's debate, falsely claiming Haitian migrants in Springfield have been eating people's pets. Local police and city officials have repeatedly said there is no evidence to support that claim. Trump running mate and Ohio Sen. @JDVance has also pushed the debunked claim.

It's unclear if the bomb threat is connected to the false claim.Image
Update from our @SpectrumNews1OH newsroom on the bomb threat in Springfield, Ohio:

The local police chief will hold a press briefing at 2:30pm ET to provide an update.

The city also shared this statement about the impact the bomb threat is having:

"All Clark County, Ohio office buildings have been closed to the public out of abundance of caution due to recent threats made to other local government entities in Springfield on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The closure includes all commission departments, as well as the Springview Government Center, the Clark County Department of Job and Family Services, the Clark County Common Pleas Court, the Clark County Board of Elections, the Clark County Juvenile Court and the A.B. Graham Building.

At this time, there have been no known threats directed to Clark County offices."
Update from the @springfieldnews:

“Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said everyone who was in the City Hall building was moved out and is safe. Rue would not comment on the precise language of the threat but said it came from someone claiming to be from Springfield, and mentioned frustration with the city related to Haitian immigration issues.”

🧵 Today, the U.S. House is set to vote on whether Ohio Rep. @Jim_Jordan should be the next Speaker.

I've covered Jordan closely since 2018, interviewing him dozens of times and reporting on every aspect of his job.

The story that stands out most is related to Jan. 6, 2021.
Between November 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021, @Jim_Jordan became the unofficial congressional spokesperson for then-Pres. @realDonaldTrump's baseless efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Over and over again, Jordan insisted Congress should step in to keep Trump in office.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Jordan played a leading role in getting lawmakers to object to certifying Biden's election win on the House floor, despite no evidence of widespread fraud existing.

Jordan's communications with Trump on that day have been under a bright spotlight ever since.

As @HenryJGomez first reported this morning, former #OHSen candidate and current State Senator Matt Dolan (@dolan4ohio) has sent this letter to Ohio county GOP chairs in response to activists and party leaders encouraging him to challenge Democratic Sen. @SherrodBrown in 2024.
Of the 6 GOP candidates who ran for #OHSen this year, @dolan4ohio was the only one to reject Donald Trump's lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

He invested $10M+ of his family fortune into his race & finished 3rd in the primary.

My profile from March:
spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/po…
In his letter, @dolan4ohio repeats his desire for the @ohiogop to put forth "substantive candidates not personalities and election deniers."

He says focusing on anything besides @SherrodBrown's voting record "places our chances of reclaiming the seat, and the Senate, at risk."

📍 Avon, Ohio

#OHSen candidate @JDVance1 is kicking off Election Day Eve with an event in Lorain County.

“The biggest threat to American security in my lifetime is this terrible crisis at the southern border,” Vance says, as he delivers his usual stump speech.

~60 people here. Image
As the #OHSen race winds down, I asked @JDVance1 what block of voters has been the toughest to get through to.

“…a lot of the Trump base is still very hard to get through to, in part because they don’t trust the press — in my view, rightfully so.”

He also says suburban women.
In Avon, I asked #OHSen candidate @JDVance1 what he says to voters who like outgoing-@senrobportman’s dealmaking style on Capitol Hill and wonder if Vance will replicate it.

“I’m running to get things done. And that’s the way in which I think Senator Portman really is a model.”
