While I understand that new fighters are just being given a shot, the dedication required to break into the UFC takes years away other opportunities. In no other major sport would a player do 2-3 years and walk away feeling like it was a mistake, and neither should UFC fighters.
By the time they’re done paying coaches, agents & sparring partners, new & non-elite fighters barely have enough left over to get them through until the next fight. If they get injured or a fight is canceled, many end up in a hard spot. This is unacceptable for an elite sport.
I’ve long advocated a legislative solution. Despite the presence of Bellator, the UFC is an effective monopoly like MLB, NFL, NBA & NHL. Congress should grant UFC a monopoly exemption w/strings attached: %-based fighter pay, long-term medical for fight-related injuries, etc.
BTW I reject any hating on Dana White. I was a fan when MMA was banned in 49 states, and the product was a hokey, Indian casino, bloody mess. Now it’s a global sport that attracts top athletes, and we have Dana to thank for that. But it’s time to start acting like a major sport.
Responses to a few replies:
1."Many boxers don't make much" - Boxers are free agents, not bound employees like UFC fighters.
2."Minor league..." - UFC is the big leagues.
3."LEGISLATION?!?" - We already to this w/other sports, granting monopoly exemptions w/strings attached.
Again: UFC fighters are EMPLOYEES. They can't fight anywhere else, and can't use events to promote sponsors. If they get injured pre-fight, they often don't get paid. Medical care is limited to explicit fight-caused injuries. They're company workers, but treated like free agents.
I'm not making a social justice point. I'm talking as a fan. I want young Lebrons & Gronkowskis to consider fighting as a first option. For that to happen, fighters who make it into the #1 MMA organization in the world have to be treated like elite athletes.

Most people (me included) aren’t capable of parsing mRNA vaccine literature, and so can only rely on authorities. Unfortunately, the authorities spent last year canceling our jobs, weddings and funerals while insisting that murderous riots were a public health necessity.
Tribalism always emerges when institutional trust erodes. People might not be certain which side is telling them the truth, but they can certainly tell which side is actively wishing them harm.
The media & political authorities have so polluted the information environment that it is impossible for well-meaning people to tell up from down. Even “pro-science” people are just following a party line: They were vaccine skeptics less than a year ago.

The problem with this idea is that Cuba is full of a bunch of people like @GamebredFighter, who might not like communism, but aren’t going to lay out the welcome mat for a bunch of gringos kicking down their front door, either.
Maybe the Cubans throw roses at our feet and “welcome us as liberators”. But maybe they don’t. People get funny about armed foreigners barking orders at them. So then what? Drones patrolling the countryside in search of farmers w/AKs out after curfew? Cuba libre, but hard pass.
We killed a bunch kids w/the very first barrage of the aerial assault on Baghdad. Which means even if everything had gone perfectly as planned in Iraq, we’d still have children’s blood on our hands. Sometimes you gotta go to war, but indulge no illusions about it.

I think I've had discussions w/enough Boomer-tier Trump supporters who believe the 2020 election was fraudulent to extract a general theory about their perspective. It is also the perspective of most of the people at the Capitol on 1/6, and probably even Trump himself. 1/x
Most believe some or all of the theories involving midnight ballots, voting machines, etc, but what you find when you talk to them is that, while they'll defend those positions w/info they got from Hannity or Breitbart or whatever, they're not particularly attached to them. 2/x
Here are the facts - actual, confirmed facts - that shape their perspective: 1) The FBI/etc spied on the 2016 Trump campaign using evidence manufactured by the Clinton campaign. We now know that all involved knew it was fake from Day 1 (see: Brennan's July 2016 memo, etc). 3/x

Talking to a lot of people who’ve never been in a physical confrontation who are full of opinions on the right way to police ghettos or de-escalate an agitated mob. Seen too many movies where some philosopher-cop pulls out the perfect line that makes all involved see the light.
There’s a reason cops are cops and you’re the one who calls the cops when someone scares you in a dog park. Putting hands on violent criminals who don’t want to be touched isn’t for everyone. It probably isn’t for you.
We’re hiring people to do a job that gets 85 of them murdered every year. There are some 800k cops in the US. For reference that’s more than all Army & Marine Corps ground forces combined. If there was a lever that could fix this problem, it would’ve been pulled long ago.
