Let us talk about Fear and the role it plays in imposing autocracy and undermining democracy. @reedgalen @therickwilson @ProjectLincoln @SteveSchmidtSES @stuartpstevens @JoeTrippi @LincolnWatchman
What we saw throughout 2020 in the United States was rising Fear. What we witnessed on January 6th was about imposing Fear into the norms of how we adjudicate our political differences. In my case, in 2020, I had a front-row seat watching it both at home and abroad in Belarus.
Fear's role in illiberalism and autocratic societies is straightforward. If you challenge those in power, you will meet consequences of which you should be afraid.
The tactics include Marginalization, Threats, Repression, & even violence. Moreover, in extreme autocratic societies like Belarus, you arent' even safe if you are outside their borders.
One example of marginalization & threats from Belarus from the past few days is Belarusian Sprinter, Kristina Timanovskaya, an Olympic athlete. She sought asylum after being told she would need to return to Minsk. Timanovskaya feared she would be jailed -- she was likely right.
For more information about Timanovskay (a true and brave hero) click here
Another is Belarusian activist Vitaly Shishov. He lived in Ukraine and helped other Belarusians struggling for democracy escape persecution by seeking asylum in Kyiv. Yesterday, Vitaly went for a jog, disappeared, and was found hanged in a park.
While an investigation is ongoing, Alexander Lukashenko's regime has a history of eliminating opponents (although not typically outside its borders).

What do these events have to do with rising fear in the United States? Events on January 6th matter because they normalized violence in our political process.
When working worldwide with those fighting for democracy like Belarus, I would always say you either decide governance at the ballot box or on the streets. What I meant is you either have faith in each other including those who govern, or you fear each other and your government.
Today we have scores of politicians on the right who may or may not realize what they are doing, but they are responsible for increasing fear. Moreover, they are doing so in ways they don't think matter -- playing the game, they know not the zero-sum game we are forced to play.
Here are just a couple of examples, which might appear small but matter significantly in a political system where a precedent has been set to use the violence we saw on January 6th.
The first is @gopleader saying it "will be hard not to hit" House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with the Speaker's gavel if Republicans take control.

cnn.com/2021/08/01/pol…
On the surface, he is attempting to make a joke. What he doesn't get (or perhaps does) is underneath this speaks to those who stormed the capitol, or support it. Those who would have likely killed the Speaker.
In the game we are forced to play, such jokes now have an entirely different context and bar— one of creating fear.

Another is this tweet by @elisestepanik -- suggesting American Must Be Saved.
Again, in the game, we know such a fund-raising appeal wouldn't raise eyebrows, but it raises lots of questions in the game we play.
Elise is on the @nedemocracy board. If Lukashenko suggested his actions were about "Saving Belarus," would she believe that was ok? Probably not.

The United States isn't Belarus at the moment.
Yet, our political system's rising fear is no different from the rising levels of fear within those who oppose Alexander Lukahsenkos's autocratic (and brutal) rule. Democracy requires Faith in Each other to sustain and maintain.
Fear is cancer that consumes a democracy. It might be slow at first but left unchecked you end up where they are today in Belarus.

Earlier I provided analysis from yesterday about the illiberal and autocrats' tactics around the Select Hearings on January 6th.
@reedgalen @TheRickWilson @SteveSchmidtSES @ProjectLincoln @JoeTrippi @stuartpstevens @LincolnWatchman
Now I will give you something to feel better. There are Seven Rules for confronting autocratic forces based on my experiences. Here is how each was utilized by those defending our democracy. The Members of Congress on the select committee -- and those who literally did on Jan 6
For the sake of ease, I will take the Rules one at a time with examples. Let's look at how the committee and those who testified did with each of them. First, Rule 1 – Play the Game You Are in Not the One You Wish or Want to Play

Let's talk about the January 6th Select Committee Hearings but from a different perspective. @ProjectLincoln @reedgalen @stuartpstevens @SteveSchmidtSES @JoeTrippi @LincolnWatchman @TheRickWilson
I am sure you watched the Select Committee Hearings. Rather than talk about the specifics, I want to show examples of how they relate to Fear. In particular, the Six Tactics used by Illiberal actors & autocrats to gain & maintain power by the right, outside of the hearing room.
All autocratic actors have an objective of gaining and then maintaining power. They also share the same strategy of creating a sense of inevitability and invincibility through fear. There are six primary tactics they use.

THREAD -- Let's talk about political risk. Not the risk someone like @kevinmacarthy takes when appeasing and acquiesces to DJT. @lincolnproject, @SteveSchmidtSES , @reedgalen,@stuartstevens, @rickwilson, @lincolnwatchman @JoeTrippi
Instead, I want to discuss the political risk nations incur when they move from liberal democracy to an illiberal state. One of the consequences of 1.6 -- and more broadly the last decade -- with democratic norms under assault in the US is the economic consequences.
Sovereign risk is typically the domain of people on Wall Street, Multinational corporates, & those in business schools. Most Americans don't think much about our own sovereign risk because the United States has been where others go to escape it. We have been the reserve currency.

I thought it might be interesting for people to provide some perspectives, having helped train so many freedom fighters like those who battle for change and democracy in Cuba.
Events today in Cuba are like all battles between those desiring democracy and those wishing to impose/maintain autocracy; a question of faith versus fear. Cuba has been under authoritarian control for over sixty years.
Cynical politicians on the right in the US are trying to make this a battle about socialism or communism. These tweets and pronouncements are nothing but cynical pandering intended for domestic political gain.

@ProjectLincoln @SteveSchmidtSES @reedgalen @TheRickWilson @stuartpstevens @JoeTrippi This is violent political extremism. What is more important than the video is how we got to this place in the United States.
What leads Americans to feel their democratic system is failing so badly they have to resort to this kind of violence. In working worldwide helping build democracy's values, I would often say you either settle a nation's difference through the ballot box or on the streets.
Liberal Democracy uses the former. Illiberal Autocracy uses the latter. Democracy is faith in each other. Illiberalism is fear of each other. The video is about Americans who are afraid and without faith in the legitimacy of the democratic system.

@ProjectLincoln @SteveSchmidtSES @stuartpstevens @TheRickWilson @reedgalen @JoeTrippi @MeghanMcCain, I was with your dad many times with those fighting for freedom against autocrats around the world in his role as Chairman of @IRIglobal.
I will never forget in Riga him telling Belarusians, Ukrainians, & our mutual friend Boris Nemtsov "nothing is more sacred than the sanctity of people's votes being counted." That even "Putin, Lukashenko, and the autocrats must honor the will of the people
-- peacefully and respectfully." @LindseyGrahamSC was beside him nodding along and concurring. What we saw on 1.6 and the lead-up to it would have troubled your dad, of that I am certain. On 9/11 we were attacked by foreign extremist forces.
