🧵OK, I have a theory. I don't know if the Knicks will wind up able to do it, but the math checks out.

You know the report of a potential Reggie Bullock S&T? It's possible that it was for Jalen Brunson but I don't think it was. I think the Knicks are trying to create a TPE (1/9)
For those who don't know, a Traded Player Exception (TPE) is a way for over-the-cap teams to exceed the salary cap. Last year, Boston "traded" Gordon Hayward into Charlotte's cap space and received a big TPE. They could then absorb salary without needing trades to match (2/9)
The Mavs are signing Bullock to 3/$30.5M, which is very close to signing for a three-year MLE. The Mavs are also gaining a $10.8M TPE for dumping Richardson into Boston's TPE. Signing Bullock via the MLE would still give the Mavs their TPE to use over the next 365 days (3/9)
TPEs can only be used for trades and S&Ts. Thus, the Bullock S&T rumor. Dallas may prefer to S&T Bullock into their TPE and then spend the MLE on someone like Schroder or Jackson or any player they believe they can sign and help. #acronyms

However, there's an issue... (4/9)
The Richardson trade hasn't been made official yet, so the Mavs don't actually have their TPE to use. Bullock's salary could slide right into that TPE, but with the TPE being held up because no trade has been finalized, the Mavs are likely stuck. This leads us to the Knicks (5/9)
You can't keep a TPE if you're under the cap. The Knicks will no longer be under the cap now that they're signing Kemba Walker. But in order to sign Kemba, they have to clear Bullock's cap hold. This could render a S&T pointless, unless the Knicks can get a 2nd round pick (6/9)
Or, the Knicks could do something else. They could keep Bullock's cap hold on the books + dump Kevin Knox's salary elsewhere (OKC?).

Knox's salary = $5.85M
Bullock's cap hold = $5.46M

They're similar. Too similar. Then factor in that Knox won't see PT in NY? No brainer (7/9)

Terrible pun aside, this could open the door for Nunn to sign with the Knicks.

The obstacle in place for teams was signing Nunn to an offer sheet on August 6th. The Heat would have 48 hours to match. Knowing P** R****, he would have made a decision at the 11th hour
This also would have tied up NY's money for the next FIVE DAYS. The market has almost dried up and it hasn't even been 24 hours. Can you imagine waiting another five days for the Heat to potentially match the offer sheet? It could have been a very bad gamble

With Taj coming back, the Knicks now project to have 14 players on the roster. They have some cap space to sign someone else, which would mean 15 players. But they also have the room exception at their disposal that they would hopefully use on someone. So we have a problem (1/2)
Let's see if this ages like milk but prediction:

Knicks S&T for a PG and send out Knox + Vildoza, getting them back to 14 players. Then they give the 15th roster spot to the player taking the room exception. And finally, they use their two two-way deals on Pinson and Sims (2/2)
P.S. Knicks could always sign McBride using part of the room exception. Only problem is that the contract is limited to two years. Knicks are better off signing someone for the entire room exception and then signing Deuce to a minimum contract for 3-4 years imo

🧵 Knicks need to use their remaining $ on a player signed for multiple years since they'll be over the cap. Will need as much future salary possible for trades.

FO will also want a PG. Rose hasn't played 60+ games since 2017. IQ's 21. Deuce is a rookie. Vildoza isn't a starter
Before I continue, slight correction: IQ's 22. This is why you should always double check your research smh.

Anyways, back to the regularly scheduled programming...
Barring the Knicks trading for someone under contract right now, here are the remaining PGs in FA + their ages next year:

Schroder (28)
Jackson (31)
Nunn (26)
Williams (35)
Mills (33)
Ish Smith (33)

The latter three likely aren't getting multi-year deals. So we're down to three

Ok...

Once the Knicks use up all of their cap space, they are eligible for the room exception, worth $4.9M.

Knicks are ineligible to receive the tax MLE ($5.9M) because they're not a tax team, nor can they get the non-tax MLE ($9.5M) because they used cap space
NY has Rose's early bird rights. If they keep his rights, the most they can offer is 175% of his contract last year. That's $13.4M.

If the Knicks renounce his rights, they can sign him up to the max. Note: not the max, UP TO the max.

There is a discrepancy with the reported #
By giving Rose the reported 3/$43M, his starting salary is $13.6M. That's $200K more than what Rose's max would be if the Knicks keep his rights, which is a problem. Means that the Knicks would have to use cap space to sign Rose to this deal. It's the least Brock Aller move ever
