In response to a FOI sent by @BylineBITE, HS2 Ltd revealed that 15 hectares of “irreplaceable” ancient woodland have already been destroyed by the project - the number of individual trees is not known.

According to Rachel Hackett of the Wildlife Trust “ancient wood that is lost to HS2 is a permanent loss for nature and wildlife”.
Hackett also raised concerns about the feasibility of HS2 Ltd’s promise to leave behind 30% more wildlife habitat than currently exists.
