Americans now promoting or dreaming of fascism as a model for the US need to spend time in a fascist country: to witness how such governments lie to their citizens, steal from them, punish, imprison and kill critics and opponents, and aggrandize power to their own interests.
I’ve spent much of my career covering fascism and authoritarianism from China to Russia to Zimbabwe and beyond. There’s no need even to study the history books - though it would help - because these govts are alive and well today. Americans who praise their leaders - see Trump 2/
3/ Or do their PR - see Tucker Carlson - are either ignorant of the facts or envious of their power and control or perhaps both. Nothing of fascism is consistent with American principles of government. That this has become a partisan issue is deeply alarming.
4/ But it’s part of a larger trend. I watched with alarm as, in 2016, it became acceptable to dismiss or deny foreign interference in a US election if it suited one party, and then in 2020, it became acceptable to solicit and abet such help. (See Giuliani).
5/ We should not have been surprised then that a sitting president would imitate a fascist by attempting to steal an election. And now even an honest accounting of that attempt has become a partisan issue. So to my fascist-curious fellow citizens, please spend some time there.
6/ Meet the victims of the oppression, or their families and friends if - as is often the case - they’re no longer around. See how the system operates. Don’t believe their propaganda or the Americans willing to amplify it. The reality is far more disturbing.

George Floyd’s former girlfriend, Courteney Batya Ross, breaking down now as she shares story of meeting Floyd for the first time: “He said, can I pray with you?”
Ross sweetly described this now familiar photo of Floyd as a “dad selfie”, smiling as she says dads don’t always take them from the right angle.
“Floyd and I both suffered from an opioid addiction”, Ross says. “It’s a classic story of how many people get addicted to opioids. We both suffered from chronic pain.”
In two days, we had two alarming intel reports about two severe threats to the US: foreign election interference and domestic terrorism. Neither is new but both share a new, growing component: the aiding and abetting by Americans in positions of power. 1/
2/ The most alarming aspect of ODNI’s assessment of 2020 election interference was not that Russia interfered again and, again, to help Trump and hurt his Democratic opponent. Senior intel officials always tell me that Russia is predictably consistent.
3/ What’s most concerning is that Russia had help. ODNI report states: “A key element of Moscow’s strategy this election cycle was its use of proxies linked to Russian intelligence to push influence narratives - incl misleading or unsubstantiated allegations against Pres Biden..”
I’ve covered Intl terrorism for 20 years & the parallels to the US domestic terror threat are real & frightening.
- radicalization online
- demonization of the ‘enemy’ to justify violence
- draw to a cause greater than themselves
- devotion to a cultish leader 1/
2/ - belief in a false reality
- deep feeling of humiliation and victimization
What’s different and more dangerous about the domestic terror threat is that a former US president willfully echoes their rhetoric & feeds their anger.
3/ Moreover, they have virtually unfettered access to weapons given US gun laws and, unfortunately, military and law enforcement veterans in their ranks with training that can be dangerously useful in the cause of violence.
Glenn, he held back military assistance to Ukraine to force a political favor against Biden. He twice ordered the withdrawal of US forces from Syria, ceding territory to Russia & Iran. He refused to blame or call out Russia for 2016 election interference, Navalny poisoning 1/
2/ ..arms to Taliban or now this enormous cyber attack. congress had to force bim to enforce sanctions against Russia via veto-proof majorities. Otherwise, superb point.
3/ Undermining NATO alliance, withdrawing troops from Germany, and questioning mutual defense provisions of NATO are also all gifts to Putin and the Kremlin.
