Learning How To Write Novels

Arguably, writing is a skill, but the quality of what you write will depend on ability (and persistence).

Many writers will tell you that going on creative writing courses will help. I started without any formal training, and perhaps it shows in my work. I assume that you are not using novel writing software to create your masterpiece

Here are some hints to help you make a start writing books.

1. Understand Your Genre

Read widely - you need to know the competition, particularly the top selling authors. This is a great start to learning how to write novels, because you see what sells.

2. Map Out The Story In Advance (Or Not)

Successful writers start out with a plan for the novel: start, middle and end, with the plan pinned up on a wall. I just can't write books this way. I like writing a book to be a journey of discovery for me as well as the reader...

So, find which method works for you.

2. How To Write Novels - Just Do It

It will surely make you think about 'point of view' (POV). Who is speaking in the story you are writing - that is, whose point of view is it?

There are many technicalviewpoints, but the rule is simple: decide your POV and stick to it :))

3. A Plot Will Emerge

Don't worry if you don't have a plot. Imagine your main character (MC), and start describing her. Then, describe the character's appearance. Where is the MC - is there a place you know well?

Many novelists set their stories in their home county. Put your MC there. Then inject randomness to that day - maybe the MC witnessed a crime. What was behind that event? Or, take any news story, and think about how it got to you.

4. The very process of setting the words down will release your creative side

Draw on your experiences whenever you can. Writers write best about what they know well, and nothing beats experience. Research thoroughly those topics you don't know well.

5. Structure: Threads

As you write, break your threads up into scenes , for example - meetings, character description and some background scene setting.

6. Grammar And Punctuation

If you feel you are shaky in these areas, don't worry, a proofreader can correct them. Writing books is about much more than punctuation if you have a good story to tell.

If you are really poor in this respect then it would be best to hire a professional proof editor before sending your manuscript to an agent or publishe :))

In Conclusion

Just do it. Write the first word, then the sentence and so on. Don't be too ambitious with your early objectives. Write your first hundred words. Review them, then write your next hundred words.
