1. With the Reactionary International, lobbying $$$ plays as much a role as ideology. Arthur J. Finkelstein, Paul Manafort & Roger Stone are emblematic figures who discovered the synergy you can get from acting as a bridge between USA right & foreign autocratic counterparts
2. It's hardly an accident that Tucker Carlson's dad is bigwig in firm that represents Orban. Not that there is a direct quid pro quo but rather that there is a small shared social world where lobbyist & right-wing media overlap.
3. An interesting precursor to the current Orbanolatry is the Pinochet cheerleading of the 1970s/1980s. One key example is William F. Buckley setting up with Nena Ossa (an agent of Chilean regime) the ostensibly private American-Chilean Council.
4. The American-Chilean Council was tight with the American right in ways that were far outside the bounds of journalistic ethics. Many National Review writers/editors took Chilean junkets & wrote celebratory accounts.
5. Praising National Review writer Robert Moss, Nena Ossa said of his report from Chile: “Fortunately he seems to be enough to the Right to understand that he cannot possibly write all he sees and hears. His fight against Marxism is much more important than being a journalist.”

Counterpoint: climate change is real.
I'm trying not to be glib about this. It's true that all human societies (or all animal societies for that matter) have faced crises since time immemorial. But in last century there is novel development of civilization ending problems: nuclear weapons & climate change.
Doom-mongering is bad, yes. But climate change (especially in context of nuclear armed states to fight future wars in resource wrecked world) really seems like something bigger than humanity has ever faced. And to date, species isn't doing a good job on it.

1. The cult of Orban on the right has many sources, one strand of which is religion. Long before Carlson's pilgrimage to Budapest, white evangelicals were hailing Orban as a savior who figured out how to overcome the dreaded "demographic winter" of white decline.
2. "Demographic winter" is shorthand for the fear that the richer (white) countries aren't having enough babies and so will have to take in more immigrants. It's a big source of anxiety among white evangelicals
3. Orban has shrewdly courted white evangelicals, seeing them as a bridge to GOP and thus American foreign policy. In 2017, Orbán hosted in Budapest a meeting of the World Congress of Families, an important religious right group.

1. Much has been writen ideological forces (xenophobia, religious traditionalism) behind Tucker Carlson's Obran-olatry. But beyond ideological affinity it's always worth thinking about the more worldly glue that binds USA right to foreign dictators: junkets, swag, payola.
2. In the current Hungarian case, the Obran regime has actively tried to cement the alliance with USA right with fellowships (like the one Rod Dreher has) and lobbying (some of which done by firm Tucker Carlson's dad belongs to).
3. As with so much, there are important Cold War roots. William F. Buckley and National Review not only defended regimes like South Africa, Rhodesia, Chile etc. but took junkets from them and actively worked with propaganda wing of their governments to shape stories.

1. The new documentary about Anthony Bourdain, Roadrunner, is less about Bourdain than it is about mourning Bourdain, the still unprocessed grief felt not just by Bourdain's family & friends but his many fans at his suicide.
2. As a film about mourning, it's very effective, capturing what energizing life force Bourdain was to those around him and why he was so loved, while also outlining some of the sources of his inner turmoil.
3. The film's use of computer technology to recreate Bourdain's voice has been rightly criticized but for me the bigger problem was the decision not to interview Bourdain's final romantic partner, Asia Argento.

1. So, Carlson and Orban, what the hell is up with that?
2. As I've suggested before, it's an example of what Orwell called "transferred nationalism": ideologues dissatisfied with home country looking for ideal society abroad. Something that goes back to Enlightenment (Voltaire) & includes left (Shaw & Webbs fawning over Stalin)
3. The "transferred nationalism" of the right is under-studied but it's real: there were fellow-travellers of fascism in 1930s and National Review types in 1960s/1970s who glamorized Franco's Spain, Salazar's Portugal, Smith's Rhodesia, apartheid South Africa

1. This reminds me I have some thoughts on the pre-history of the mullet, the Beastie Boys, Dan Clowes, the way naming something makes it visible and changes our sense of the past, Jack Kirby, etc.
2. Back in 1989, Daniel Clowes in Eightball #2 had a strip called "I Hate You Deeply" about various peeves, including "guys with short hair on top and long hair in back." There was no name for what Clowes was describing although it was becoming more pervasive: the mullet.
3. History records that the mullet as a term was first popularized, and perhaps even coined, by the Beastie Boys in 1994. But as the Clowes strip shows, mullets had pre-dated that -- and many readers testified that when they saw Clowes drawing it resonated with what they saw.
