Cases and deaths continue to rise in Canada π¨π¦, Mexico π²π½, and the United States πΊπΈ, as adherence to public health measures relaxes, the Delta variant π¦ circulates, and vaccination π coverage varies within countries.
Although cases π¦ are surging in some areas, there is clear evidence that wherever vaccines π are available, they limit severe illness π€ and save lives.
More than 6οΈβ£ months after the first doses arrived π¦ in our region, the disparity in who can access vaccines π and who cannot is unacceptable.
We must banish the idea that vaccine π inequity is the problem of some countries and not others, and instead work together π€ to find solutions for all countries.
And we must do it quickly β because lives hang in the balance.
Countries in the Americas π have access to the PAHO Revolving Fund, which is an integral part of our technical cooperation package consolidating country π demand from 41 Member States and territories...
For decades, the Revolving Fund has been a catalyst of equity and solidarity and has been responsible for protecting generations of children π§πΏπΆπ½π§π»π¦π½ across Latin America and the Caribbean from vaccine-preventable diseases π¦
Throughout the first 6οΈβ£ months of this year, most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean π have been unable to access enough vaccines π
Others are beginning to benefit from donations π¦ from countries with additional doses. These donations are more than a display of solidarity β for some countries, they are the only hope of saving lives, and we need more of them.
All of these are efforts are focused on diversifying opportunities for countries π to access the doses they need in the fastest and most effective way possible.
But the region is still short of the doses π needed to turn the tide of the pandemic. We need a significant influx of vaccines and a more equitable process for distributing them.
The Revolving Fund is now receiving requests from countries π in the region for #COVID19 π for the last three months of 2021 and for the calendar year 2022.
So far, more than 20 countries have formally expressed interest and the number is growing by the day.
This new initiative will make available tens of millions of COVID-19 π doses beyond the 20 percent COVAX offers, and it will complement bilateral deals and other existing avenues for countries π to access vaccines.
PAHO already monitors π immunization coverage closely, and we are now rolling out a new system that collects the vaccination π needs of each country faster and more efficiently.
This will help ensure that better deals can be closed with manufacturers and that available doses π are distributed equitably, based on the latest epidemiology and vaccine coverage.
This has long been the mission of PAHO and its Revolving Fund, and we vow to work tirelessly to achieve a sustainable supply of COVID-19 vaccines π for all our countries.
COVID infections π¦ are accelerating in North America, driven primarily by a surge in cases in the southern and eastern United States πΊπΈ and in central Mexico π²π½
More and more, disease trends are showing a region divided by vaccine π access.
In countries π with adequate vaccine supply π¦, infections are decreasing π; in places where vaccine coverage is still low, infections remain highπ
As of this week, our region π reported nearly 74 million cases and 1.9 million deaths from COVID-19 π¦ , accounting for more than a third of COVID cases and more than 40% of deaths reported worldwide this week.
And while new cases are down β¬οΈ nearly 20% from last week, many countries β including the U.S. πΊπΈβ are seeing a resurgence of infections π¦
Before we start our briefing today, I must acknowledge the event that unfolded this morning in #Haiti leading to the untimely death of President Moise Jovenel.
