On this day, 17 years ago, something unbelievable happened in the Nagpur District Court. Around 200 women killed a criminal named Akku Yadav in court premises using stones, kitchen knives and chilli powder, putting an end to the torture they underwent for years.
A notorious gangster, Akku Yadav terrorized the Dalit residents of the Kasturba Nagar primarily by using rape as a tool to silence and oppress. He committed absolutely horrific acts intended to humiliate, subjugate and instill fear among the residents.
He committed murders, regularly beat up people for money and valuables and invaded homes. The local police did not help the victims, they were bribed by Yadav. When he was detained, he was released on bail.
Usha Narayane, around 25 yrs old and one of the few educated residents, witnessed her neighbour’s home being attacked by Yadav. She filed a police complaint. In retaliation Yadav and his goons surrounded her house and threatened to rape, maim and kill her if she didn’t back down.
Narayane refused, locked herself inside and threatened to blow up a cooking gas cylinder if they entered the house. They backed down. But word spread, and emboldened by her actions, a mob burned down Yadav’s house.
Realizing that the tables had turned, Yadav surrendered himself to the police and they arrested him for *his own protection*. His case was posted for bail on 13th August 2004, and he was confident that he would be out.
As women from Kasturba Nagar gathered in the courtroom, he spotted a woman he had raped and taunted her and laughed. Enraged and fed up, the women collectively descended on him and killed him right there inside the courtroom.
Five women including Narayane were arrested, but all 200 women claimed responsibility for the act. They were acquitted in Nov, 2014 – a decade later.
