Dear @GavinNewsom I sit here realizing that you are spending every day, fighting to keep your job, and the career you’ve built. You are trying to make the case that you should keep your job, and that’s a pretty terrible feeling. 1/
The irony is not lost on me that in early 2020, I was one of thousands of California freelancers, calling your office and the offices of my assembly person and senator, asking for help to keep my own livelihood, one I’d worked to build over a period of years, harmed by #AB5 2/
I called daily, wrote letters, took meetings with lawmakers explaining my #smallbusiness And while I got some sympathetic listening, there was no action taken to help professionals like myself from being cast aside. Frustrating as heck. 3/
The narrative that anyone #selfemployed (save those special occupations w/lobbying dollars) were somehow all just exploited gig workers negated my years of education & professional experience. I called into hearings; legislators like @SenHannahBeth called our careers lollipops 4/
I went to rallies with other #freelancers and was called a bot, a Trump supporter, a paid political consultant and a number of other names by @LorenaAD80 because I was fighting for the future of my business. 5/
As the pandemic deepened, I balanced working from home and helping out senior family members to minimize their exposure to the virus, while fighting for my business. It was exhausting and scary. 6/
20 months later, I’m still fighting this battle, not only in CA with #AB5 still in place, and now with the #ProAct looming federally. I saw your press conference. You’re tired of being attacked. I feel ya—so are we. 7/
1/3 of the CA workforce has been fighting for our livelihoods for 20+ months. Now you face that same fight. I don’t know what your future holds. My wish is that you find the lesson in this fight… ppl want to keep their jobs, and be heard. #FightForFreelancers#RepealAB5 /end

Thread: #AB5 hurts small businesses by not allowing subcontracting as part of #BusinessToBusiness Today I was presented with an opportunity to bid on some work. It was work from home, great during this pandemic. So what happened? #AB5stories 1/
This project would be an opportunity to collaborate with a longtime friend and colleague, who is also an independent consultant. We each have our own businesses (separate LLCs), clients, and market ourselves. The client could use both of our expertise. #AB5stories 2/
The client wants one statement of work for the project. So to make that happen, one of our businesses would be the lead, and the other would subcontract. Under #AB5 that’s not allowed. #AB5stories 3/
