1978: Soviets back coup in Afghanistan to topple government.

1979: Soviets invade to squash rebellion against puppet government by the mujahideen. US backs rebels.

1989: Soviets withdraw in failure, leaving a Soviet-backed dictator.
1992: Soviet-backed Afghan dictator is toppled by rebels from the mujahideen.

1994: Taliban rises, consisting mostly of former mujahideen fighters who fought the Soviets in 1980s.

1996: Taliban takes power. A former mujahideen fighter named Osama Bin Laden settles there.
2001: Bin Laden attacks US, which responds by invading Afghanistan after Taliban refuses to hand him over without evidence of charges against him. Taliban then returns to its mujahideen roots as an insurgency.
2021: After 20 years of occupying Afghanistan and attempting to transform it into a democracy with reliable security forces, US withdraws. Within a month, the Taliban sweeps across nearly the whole country.
Thus, 40 years after the US first armed, trained, and funded a group of rebels in Afghanistan, it is now withdrawing as it discovers that its sponsorship of that rebellion was so unintentionally successful that it has now lost to the offspring of the mujahideen it cultivated.
The disaster in Afghanistan began with the Soviets. It originated with a ceaseless wave of foreign meddling that’s lasted nearly half a century. The roots of the Taliban, religious radicalization, poverty and devastation lie in foreign interference in the country.
Afghanistan got independence from the British in 1919. For over half a century, it was generally calm, civilized, and peaceful.

For the past 43 years, the violence has not stopped.

And foreign interference started it.

As a renter in America, I have only seen the US eviction moratorium drive up prices and reduce options. Rental property owners don’t want to put their properties on the market because they don’t have confidence that they will either get paid or they can kick out the tenant.
As a prospective tenant who wants to pay his landlord, this creates a situation for me where there are less listings and higher prices for the existing listings. It creates a shortage of housing.
Without the guarantee that rent will be paid, there is no incentive for property owners to offer their property for rent. If they hold back from listing, then there is no property to rent. And those who suffer are those who need to rent.

“Despite support from Pakistan over the years, the Taliban are not an invading force like Islamic State in Iraq but an Afghan nationalist movement that has fought for 20 years to expel foreign invasion and occupation forces from their country.”

“His American allies must make it clear to him and his government, and to the Taliban, that the United States will fully support every effort to achieve a more peaceful political transition.”

What I appreciate about @BJP4India versus @INCIndia is that the BJP truly is a party with a difference. Its ideology is very clear, easy to understand, & straightforward. It’s obvious what the BJP stands for. There’s no confusion about its goal. None of that is true of INC.
Other than perpetuating its own existence, the INC appears to have no primary goal.
Nor is it apparently willing to take a stand on any of the controversial wedge issues which would not only demarcate it as a party with a difference but also distinguish it as a party committed to something truly different.

Hindutva right-wing aficionados abroad take out the knives against me once again, this time angered over my 5-day hunger-strike against @jack’s donation to #RSS affiliate Sewa International.

It’s always a good sign that I touched a nerve.
Ramesh Rao rehashes, in a desperate attempt to defame me, old and largely invented allegations.

I’m on hunger-strike to protest @jack’s $2.5 million donation to @sewausa. #TakeItBackJack

After about 60 hours on hunger-strike, I remain resolute and in a spirit of Chardi Kala. However, here’s some of the ways it’s impacting me....
I’m extremely bored. Time passes very slowly. Meals (among many non-sustenance benefits) punctuate the day, psychologically signal day’s beginning/end, give something to look forward to, serve a mental interest of deciding what to eat, & are a fundamental shared human experience.
My mental clarity feels increased. I feel calmer. I feel focused when I work, but it is difficult gathering the mental energy to work. I often have ideas, but forget them within a few minutes if I don’t start writing them down. I find myself staring into space & lost in thought.

I'm going on hunger-strike to protest @jack's $2.5 million donation to Sewa International USA (@sewausa), an affiliate of India's #RSS, a violent Hindu nationalist paramilitary. #TakeItBackJack
Indefinitely, I will consume nothing but water, coffee, and tea as I demand #TakeItBackJack. #DefundRSS
Thanks, @jack.
