Last week, we heard a lot about the International Criminal Court, or the ICC.

But what exactly is the ICC, and what does it have to do with the United States, Afghanistan, and Israel? 🧵
The ICC investigates and tries those who have committed crimes against humanity. This includes cases of war crimes, torture, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Over 100 countries have ratified the treaty establishing the ICC's jurisdiction. However, the U.S. has not ratified the treaty even though we helped establish the ICC in the late 1990s.

Lately, the ICC has been working on 2 investigations that have been controversial in the U.S.

The Civilian Climate Corps & the GND for Cities became the newest bills in the GND family this week. The GND resolution has also inspired over a dozen bills, including 10 regional green new deals. Here are some recent successes:
1. Emergency Water is a Human Right Act, introduced by @RepRashida and @RepDebDingell

The American Rescue Plan, which was signed into law earlier this year, contained Emergency Water relief.
2. The Green New Deal for Public Housing, which I introduced with @SenSanders

This bill includes language to repeal the Faircloth Amendment, which would eliminate the federal limit on public housing. Last year, the Repeal the Faircloth Amendment Act passed in the House.

We support a process of self-determination for Puerto Rico. Why?

1. Statehood isn't the only option. There's also independence or free association.

2. It's not clear which of these options a majority of Puerto Ricans support.

A 2017 statehood ballot referendum had 23% voter turnout (it's usually 80%) after a boycott by all opposition political parties.

The 2020 referendum got 52% support, but asked a single yes-or-no question: Should P.R. become a state? Which is not representative of other options.
3. Congress imposing any one option on Puerto Rico would be the culmination of colonization.

Choosing for the Puerto Rican people rather than letting them determine their own fate.

In preparation for Monday's hearing, where @RepAOC will question Postmaster DeJoy, we asked NY-14 constituents how the Trump administration's sabotage of the Postal Service has impacted their lives. Here's what they shared.....(1/6)
'In late June, we sent time-sensitive notarized legal documents by priority mail. They never arrived and they appear to still be sitting in a distribution center. We had to travel to another state to re-sign and re-notarize the documents in person at the lawyer's office.' (2/6)
'Medication was mailed on 7/20 and a month later it has not yet arrived. The tracking shows no updates since 7/28. I had to request a replacement shipment, which arrived but not before I had to buy a small quantity of the medication out of pocket.' (3/6)
