Yes those were golden words of Robert Gates - one who served as Defence Secretary under both Bush and Obama and who wrote his famous book -'Duty: Memoirs Of A Secretary At War'- was regarded as US best post-World War II defense secretaries!
There was a reason why RobertGates criticised @JoeBiden , accusing him of poisoning Obama’s relationship with his generals- saying further that it was Biden who subjected @BarackObama to “Chinese water torture, every day saying- the military can’t be trusted.”
“The pres doesn’t trust his commander, can’t stand Karzai,doesn’t believe in his own strategy and doesn’t consider the war to be his.For him, it’s all about getting out.” - Gates wrote as his thoughts in his meeting with @BarackObama - but O few weeks later sent 33K more troops!
And per Robert Gates- ex Def Secy and one who presided over death of 3800 American soldiers in Afg & wrote personal letters,under his hand to every dead soldier…… it was @JoeBiden who poisoned @BarackObama mind & pushed into this confusion summed up as below:
U won’t hear commentators like @MichaelKugelman or @husainhaqqani or for that matter any1 talk of this about @JoeBiden as he is current President -it was largely this mistrust of Army & 47 yrs (added 7 yrs to Gates 40) of foreign policy failures of Biden that continues to date!
No wonder US forces are out, US is out and despite this BS of Al Qaeda on the May; fact is Ayman Al Zawahri is still alive and strong in Afghanistan

This pretty much sums it up/ if I am a Pak official in a strategic role, I will be mightily worried after reading that 2nd part- they argued for revised US strategy in AfPak focused mainly on counterterrorism in Pakistan, an effort to be accomplished exclusively from offshore!
