Please DM me with amendments! There are new facts being uncovered every day. I can add updated information that I missed to a version 2.0 of the timeline.
Lastly, I want to say thank you to all of the NFT archeologists who have been hard at work digging up old projects and helping to uncover this rich history. @adamamcbride @r0bster97 @WRabbit1111 @garyvee @DCLBlogger @HarryBTC @danielgothits and many many more!
I also want to preemptively address the decision to include both Etheria v1.1 and v1.2 in the timeline given that it is apparently such a hot button issue.
Going into creating this timeline I didn’t know anything about the v1.1 vs v1.2 debate so I consulted with many different holders of both v1.1 and v1.2 to try to get to the bottom of things.
I’m am trying to be as objective as possible and after all of my research, here are what I believe to be the facts. v1.1 was released 2 days earlier but had some bugs in it so the original developer fixed the bugs and released an updated version of the contract.
The bugs were just small fixes and the v1.1 tiles can still be owned and traded safely. Then fast forward to earlier this year when people began to realize that old NFTs were super valuable both the v1.1 and v1.2 tiles quickly began to trade at very high values.
At one point the v1.1 tiles were worth more than the v1.2 tiles.
There are several screenshots of the original developer endorsing both the v1.1 and v1.2 contract but to just highlight one quote “v1.1 is the first 3rd-party traceable NFTs, no doubt, v1.2 is the living version of Etheria that everything will flow from”.
Then all of a sudden he did a 180 and declared that only v1.2 was legitimate and proceeded to ban anyone who mentioned v1.1 from the discord and to block them on twitter as well (including multiple people that I greatly admire and respect).
I can only assume that there was some form of market manipulation going on here as no one can give me an explanation as to why v1.1 is not legitimate other than the developer all of a sudden claiming that to be the case (my intuition is that it chalks up to something as simple
…as him holding a lot more v1.2 than v1.1). Up until that point the community had been onboard with both v1.1 and v1.2 being legitimate in their own way and to this day most members still hold both.
I assume that had the developer not split the community, both versions would be worth a lot more right now. It’s just poor leadership imo. The whole thing looks quite silly from an outsider’s perspective and seems totally unnecessary.
After finding all of this out I went and did some research on twitter to see for myself and what I found didn’t sit right with me. Here is just one example to highlight what is going on.
In one thread the developer said this to @RealAllenHena “I'm thoroughly enjoying cratering the value of your TWO v1.1 tiles. You shoulda just bought some v1.2, dummy.”
There are many examples of this sort of demeanor and it's not something that the Etheria or the NFT community should be proud of. Not everyone will get this analogy but the parallels to Roger Ver here are quite comical.
They’re both geniuses who were very early to catch onto the power of blockchains but who lack the empathy and leadership qualities needed for a community to prosper and grow.
To quote someone who I spoke with (who holds both versions) “he clearly hasn’t read the book about winning friends and influencing people lol”. You all deserve so much better.
You don’t see Matt and John behaving in this manner and that's probably part of why Punks have a 100x market cap. We should all be striving to conduct ourselves in a friendly and respectful manner.
The positivity and willingness to help one another are some of my favorite things about this space. Letting this one developer dictate what has value is missing the whole point of decentralization.
I think the community and the market should stand on their own two feet and decided for themselves what is “legitimate” and what is not. The Etheria community will be stronger together and I hope they will eventually come to embrace v1.1 as part of the narrative.
There is no reason why everyone shouldn’t be friends. I have nothing but love for everyone that I spoke with on both sides. When you’re holding an asset and view a competing asset as a possible threat it’s a very natural reaction to pick sides and become hostile.
We see this all over the place in crypto but I haven’t seen anything in the NFT space this bad until now. We are better than this and shouldn’t let one person attempt to divide us.
I don’t believe it’s possible for a single person to artificially suppress an asset’s value for very long. The community got a wrapper up and got v1.1 onto OS but then the original developer had OS take it down. I would encourage @opensea to reconsider this decision.
The market is clearly trading both versions and thinks both are valuable which is why I would be remiss to not include them both in this timeline.
So ultimately the conclusion that I and many of the NFT archeologists that I respect came to is that both versions are historically significant and valuable in their own right and that people should be able to openly discuss both of them objectively, without hostility and…
…without the original developer attacking them. I believe that new people coming into this market will discover similar facts as I did and come to a similar conclusion.
I never expected to go down this rabbit hole when looking into this and I was disappointed to see the toxicity that felt all too similar to what we have all experienced coming out of a small group of the BTC community where they reject everything else as a “scam”.
I certainly can’t speak for @VitalikButerin, but I would like to think that based on the ethos he is trying to create, that he would want us to have a level-headed approach to resolving these kinds of issues and reject toxicity in whatever form it may come in.

I just want to apologize to the Etheria community for what I may have just caused. My post last night brought the Etheria v1.1 and v1.2 issue to a boiling point and clearly got to the original developer. However, I still stand by everything that I said.
The developer is making it really easy for me to get my point across. He just put a bounty out for doxxing people in the Etheria v1.1 community which really crossed a line and literally threatens their physical safety. There is no room for this type of conduct in the NFT space.
It might not be today and it might not be tomorrow but that kind of behavior eventually catches up to people. The atomic swap NFT DEXs are coming whether we like it or not. All of these NFTs live on immutable distributed ledgers.
