I had the honor to be an #IronViz judge. I entered for years and never placed. I definitely learned and each #IronViz piece still has use for various reasons.

Here's some lessons I learned or further affirmed.
#IronViz takeaways - both for your work dashboards and play:

Set the tone. This piece from @pradeep_zen nails a consistent aesthetic. The image reinforces the topic. The colors are minimal and SHAPE drives this viz more than color (more on this later).
#IronViz takeway #2 for work & play:

Design a powerful subsystem. This piece from @menscuriosa uses a consistent design on axis lines. It supports my understanding of what elements are. It doesn't ALL have to be dropped out - adding can be powerful.
#IronViz takeaway #3 for work & play:

Use your message to define the aesthetic. This entry from @LisaTrescott relies on a bold fonts and bright colors. She blurs the lines between sections with charts and creates what I call chart clusters. Powerful.
#IronViz takeaway 4 for work and play:

Take in account register. Register includes formality, jargon, and intimacy with the topic. Here, @SParsonsDataViz recognizes people need help understanding his topic and chart choices. Visual call outs are 🌟🌟🌟🌟
#IronViz takeway 5 for work and play:

Get it right in black and white. Really go look at @pradeep_zen piece and observe how much color ISN'T there. When it's used, it's important and clearly discernable.

Some lessons I've learned over the years. Many of these owe a debt to @VizCandy.

1. Kindness over chaos. When the house is on fire, we remember the person who was calm and kind and got people out. Be the calm.

2. Give it a think. It's way too easy to give yourself a pass.
3. Apologize properly. Own where you screw up and seriously work to not repeat it.

4. Reset the taboo every day: don't take people for granted just because you can. Make that taboo and keep it that way.

5. Ride the swings. We're too serious as grown ups. Swing. Laugh. Repeat.
6. Laugh often. Bonus if you nearly pee your pants or end up breathless. A good laugh is a balm. Don't fear laughter.

7. Talk about and bond over ideas. Most of us talk about things, the worst of us talk about people, and the best of us talk about ideas.
