Halifax police have now moved in on shelters and tents outside the old library on Spring Garden
Police and city staff have spoken to one person inside the green tent as well as one person inside the temporary shelter to the left, but there was no answer at the other once they knocked. Things seem to be at a standstill.
They’ve now made entry on the second shelter, it appears the individual inside was sleeping
The tent is now being taken down
Protesters have arrived — “shame on you,” one yells while blowing a whistle
Protesters are being told to push back from the area by police
More and more protesters are showing up.
Additional Halifax police crews have now arrived as well
Tensions are now escalating, police are forcing protesters back
More from the events that took place moments ago
While the protest is happening, this Halifax police officer is whistling
Protesters have linked arms as police attempt to move the shelters
Police are now pushing the protesters back again. Things are getting violent
Housing not cop chants have broken out as the shelter is forcibly removed
Protesters have now formed a new line outside the old library as police and city crews attempt to take the first shelter away
Things are deadlocked as we await an attempt from city staff and police to move the shelter.
I’m on the ground outside the library. My colleagues @AlexaMacLean902, @SarahPlowmanCTV and @zwoodford are being told they’re not allowed to move or they’ll be charged with obstruction. Disgraceful.
“Homes not cops” chants break out again
“Who does this serve? Who does this protect?”
Police moving forward
Two protesters have been arrested
Protesters holding their arms together as police move forward
Just witnessed another arrest, that’s 4 now
More arrests being made
This man said the dog will bite of police move closer. They continued to move forward and protesters collectively got the dog out
I’ve counted at least a dozen arrests now
Protesters now blocking the paddy wagon
The temporary shelter is about to be taken away
The shelter is being taken away to chants of “shame”
Now they’re going to move the second shelter. Protesters making their way back. I’ll keep tweeting until my phone dies
Just watched police arrest an individual who was protesting on a truck. They dragged them off the truck, arrested them, then dragged them to a different location once a crowd gathered
Protesters supporting this individual who was just arrested
Tensions escalate again as another arrest is made
Another arrest
I had to step away, but please follow my colleagues @AlexaMacLean902, @zwoodford, @Nicole__Munro and @lynds_armstrong for full coverage of the forcible removal of the temporary shelters.
Also, if any protesters are looking for video of the conflict, please feel free to reach out. I took extensive video on top of the ones tweeted and would be happy to provide.

This is underway. Chief Dan Kinsella says there have been a “a number of complaints” regarding the “illegal” encampments over the past few weeks.
Kinsella says “protesters behaviours and actions creates unsafe” circumstances. He says some of the protesters were organized and some came with sensory irritants
While I was there in the morning, I did not see a single protester carrying a sensory irritant
