1/ “Visual representations are time-efficient and designed to engage the reader's visual processing capacity and decrease #cognitive workload.”

How do you start w/ #infographics & visual abstracts?!

🧵 on Rip Out w/ @AylC1989 @AndrewMIbrahim & Amy Ou ! doi.org/10.4300/JGME-D… Image
2/ 1st pick a design software and stick with it!

Pro-tip: powerpoint works great!

Once you get the basics of chosen software, try to advance your skills with tutorials (ex: use PowerPoint to create animations, complex diagrams, etc) Image
3/ We break down “How to start today” in the Rip Out into (1) content and (2) design

Both are key! Or else, you either get a pretty image (!) or an #invisible message (!)

👇🏾 I will highlight a few key point! Image
4/ What content best lends itself visually?

Think stats, comparisons, processes, timeline, etc Image
5/ Replace large blocks of text with *intentional use* of visual-spatial reorganization of content

(!) Most important takeaway:

🤔Think how it will *better orient or reframe* the content for your learners 🤔 Image
6/ Strategically use design elements, ex:

⤵️arrows
💠shapes
🎨fonts/colors
🔗icons

to organize and emphasize information Image
7/ Get feedback to optimize both from a (1) content and a (2) design perspective

Important Qs to get #specific feedback on: Image
8/ Lots more practical considerations & long-term ideas to incorporate infographics in your teaching in the paper!

1/ “It doesn't matter how many innovative podcast ideas u’ve had, its impact or how many you’ve inspired over the yrs

... all that matters is that you finish-- #papers.”

So, I’m OVERJOYED to see EM leading the way in other means of contribution to medicine. Actionable tips 👇🏾
2/ First, does it meet #scholarship criteria?

1) Original content creation

2) Advanced the field by building on theory, research or best practice

3) Was archived and disseminated

4) Community able to provide feedback in a transparent fashion that informs wider discussion.
3/ For promotions & tenure:

-- Consider obtaining letters of support, discussing the impact of specific pieces of scholarship, or simply your overall impact.

-- Include editor or peer-reviewer roles for digital scholarly content in your curriculum vitae (CV)

1/ When I find myself #disappointed or frustrated with a student or trainee, I always go back to was I explicit in my #expectations?

Was I clear about my standard for pt care?

Particularly, to not make assumptions about pt’s health #literacy or understanding of their plan?
2/ Was I not clear about my expectation about their medical knowledge

And if they don’t know something, its okay

But to take a stab at looking it up themselves if they have time since that will stick a lot more #MedEd
3/ Was I clear about closed loop #communication with the interdisciplinary team

And not make assumptions that #orders does not = that it’s happening for the patient or others understand the reasoning or its importance

1/ "If doctors and nurses #clocked out when their paid #hours were finished, the effect on patients would be calamitous. Doctors and nurses know this, which is why they don’t shirk.

The system knows it, too, and takes advantage." @danielleofri nyti.ms/31ma6Qz
2/ "Increasingly, though, I’ve come to the uncomfortable realization that this #ethic that I hold so dear is being cynically #manipulated.

With mergers and streamlining, it has pushed the #productivity numbers about as far as they can go."
3/ "By now, corporate medicine has milked just about all the 'efficiency' it can out of the system."

I often think about this from an educator perspective too. My residents often say 'I just don't know how I can be any more #efficient" #MedEd
