I am LIVID!!!!! I’m in South Texas visiting family right now and wanted to get tested as soon as I got here just to be safe. A full year into this pandemic and recent uptick in cases and deaths, yet there is *still* unequal access to resources and testing here!!!!
I tried to stop in a CVS for a test, but they said that they were only accepting people with appointments and there are none available FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS!!! They suggested I go to an urgent care center instead.
I learned today that this same exact urgent care center they recommended is charging people a lot of money for these tests. My aunt was one of them.
She needed to see a doctor, but they wouldn’t see her unless she got tested before (wtaf?!). She was very sick & needed a rapid test, but because she couldn’t find another one in the city had to resort to the urgent care center, which charged her $300 for the test!!
I called the urgent care center to confirm & asked how much they are charging for the test & was told that the cost differs depending on each patient’s insurance plan.
Wasn’t this the point of the CARES Act?!! To provide funding to states to provide ample access to testing?!?!

I called the Texas Department of State Health Services to ask how this is even possible when testing should be free. They confirmed some places are charging & taking advantage of people who are desperate for tests. They said they’d heard some people were charged $500 for a test!!
This is being allowed to happen in a place where testing is not freely available for everyone. This is happening in a state where 1 in 5 people do not have health insurance.
