A small thread for a Friday.. The expected demand growth for #REE for permanent magnets in EV electric motors and wind power generators is well covered. What about electric boats?
There are close to 1m recreational boats in Sweden, probably because our archipelago looks like this. But they all rung on fossil fuels.
So not surprisingly, two really successful electric boat startups come out of Sweden, @XShoreSweden and @CandelaBoat
They are not only looking to revolutionize car travel, earlier this year they announced a collaboration with local authorities in Stockholm to revolutionize the Public Transport sector candela.com/candela-public…
@CandelaBoat made an exciting announcement yesterday focusing on the technology of electric boats
Anyone interested in engineering has to look at candela.com/technology/ , some very sleek images and videos of their engineering feat.
Their creation ?
"the most efficient and long-lasting boat motor ever made. Two ultra-compact yet strong permanent magnet motors under the water provide unrivaled range and efficiency. Enough thrust to make our boats fly at a speed of 30 knots, in absolute silence."
Further achievements:
* 23% more range than the best electric outboards
* 4x better power density than competitors
* No noise from gears, no oil changes and no maintenance
How is this made possible? The permanent magnet motors. Permanent magnets are built using rare earth elements (REE), in particular neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium.
Coincidentally, rare earth elements were first discovered in Sweden in the 1700s in a small mine on an island in the Stockholm archipelago, the Ytterby mine. amusingplanet.com/2017/08/ytterb…
So you now think, Sweden discovered the rare earth elements and are now using those resources to revolutionize boat travel? No, China is completely dominating the REE value chains
But things are changing, for example our Norra Kärr project in Sweden has the potential to offer a more secure and sustainable alternative than current supply of REE from China. leadingedgematerials.com/norra-karr/
We look forward to the day when we can silently and sustainably cruise on Lake Vättern in a @XShoreSweden or @CandelaBoat built using locally sourced rare earth elements and permanent magnets.
