We have received nearly 4000 evacuation requests from Afghanistan since I started an email RepKimEvac@mail.house.gov just 4 days ago. Many Americans stranded and even more fearful Afghans. Here are their stories (protected) and what they say about the chaos there THREAD
“I’M BEING HUNTED”: Multiple credible reports of the Taliban going door to door. Reports that Taliban has detailed information about which Afghans worked for the U.S., NGOs, other nations. Many are in hiding, fearful to test whether they can get through checkpoints. 2/15
AIRPORT GATE: The top problem we hear is chaos at airport gate. One said, “Injuries due to the use of tear gas...children separated from the adults and trampled by the crowd.” A US perm resident has been stuck 3 days without getting in, “This is the most inhumane process.” 3/15
Some people we are helping got email from US gov to head to the airport, but after making the journey, they get stuck at the gate. It is inexcusable that we cannot find a way to get those approved into the airport. We need a direct POC to call once people are at the gate 4/15
FEAR GETTING TO AIRPORT: While supposedly Americans are allowed through the multiple Taliban checkpoints set up through Kabul, many are rightfully still concerned. Afghans are downright terrified. This CNN map shows the Taliban positions around the airport. 5/15
Other NATO countries are reportedly conducting pick ups around Kabul and transporting people to the airport. If in fact the Taliban agreed to allow Americans to travel safely to the airport as Biden stated, the administration should take up this effort to transport. 6/15
COMMERCIAL/CHARTER FLIGHTS: Yesterday I spent hours talking to people who had lined up chartered flights to evac people from Kabul, but were being told by the U.S. that commercial/charters flights were not allowed to land or depart even if they weren’t heading to the U.S. 7/15
We should use every available means to get people to safety, public and private alike. The U.S. cannot be an impediment. We should accept, support, and facilitate other efforts to evac people. Some limited flights are approved now, but passengers cannot get to the flights. 8/15
OUTSIDE OF KABUL: While the bulk of media/attention is focused on Kabul, many Afghans live across the country and cannot dream of getting to Kabul right now. They report that the threat outside of Kabul is even worse, as Taliban isn’t under scrutiny of global media there. 9/15
WOMEN AND GIRLS: Women are afraid the Taliban will force girls to marry their soldiers. “I ask you for shelter in your country,” they pleaded. “There is no hope for girls, to live, work or study.” Several women report they cannot go outside for basic needs and groceries. 10/15
SPECIAL IMMIGRANT VISA: “I worked with the soldiers on the battlefields for many years. Why do I have to wait so long? I was willing to sacrifice my life for America...But now when I need help, the embassy is not helping me.” We have received thousands of similar messages. 11/15
We as a nation made a promise to these people who helped us; right now we are failing them. Biden has not yet committed to stay in Afghanistan until we get all eligible SIVs wanting to depart. We can and should make that commitment.12/15
REMOVE AUG31 DEADLINE: Panic is fueled in part by deadline set before collapse. Biden said willing to stay longer if needed, but military still planning on Aug31. This is increasing panic as people feel they have only 11 days left. We should commit to stay as long as needed 13/15
US VETERANS/NATSEC COMMUNITY: I have been unbelievably moved by US veterans/servicemembers and national security officials working to help those who helped us. “I know he would do the same for me,” one said about their Afghan counterpart. Thank you all. 14/15
My team is working around the clock to process every name we receive. We can make no promises on whether we can help everyone, but will do our best. If others need help, write RepKimEvac@mail.house.gov. Latest info from US gov here state.gov/afghanistan-in… END

WHAT NEXT? Many of us are deeply frustrated that we could not evacuate all Americans who wanted to leave Afghanistan. Now we need to hear specifics on what the plan is to get them out and continue support for Afghan partners. Here are some ideas for what happens next. THREAD
MAINTAIN TASK FORCE: State Dept must keep Afghanistan task force operational. There are major logistical challenges remaining and so many citizens/Afghans that still need help. Urge State to commit to keeping their 24/7 operation going. 2/11
IMMEDIATELY CONTACT CITIZENS: I know citizens left in Kabul including 4 yr old. They wanted to leave. Many were stuck at airport gates last night. They didn’t procrastinate. They, like our embassy, wanted to believe it wouldn’t all unravel so fast. They need constant contact.3/11
As we hit 72 hours away from Biden’s Aug 31 deadline for ending the evac mission, I’m still hearing from American Citizens, including a child, in Kabul that are terrified of being left behind. This is their story(protected) and why we must complete the mission. THREAD
I was alerted earlier this week to a family trying to flee, one of over 10,000 evacuation requests sent to my office. This family is a mix of American citizens/green card holders. They were outside one of the airport gates. They begged for someone to come out and get them. 2/13
There was a “crush of people” ahead of them. They have little kids and were concerned by the chaos surrounding them. But they didn’t want to leave because they were mere feet from reaching safety on the other side of the airport wall. 3/13
“Today I voted to move the Build Back Better budget resolution to congressional committees to work on, but I want to be crystal clear: I do not believe that this budget framework as it stands does nearly enough to meet the climate crisis at hand. THREAD
This bill may be our last best chance to truly tackle the magnitude of the climate crisis. 2/5
Unfortunately, the budget - while moving the needle significantly and tackling other critical issues - does not prioritize all that we need to do to avert the dire and catastrophic consequences of climate that have already been set in motion. 3/5
This photo of 600+ Afghans squeezed into a C-17 is so powerful; take a moment to put yourself in their shoes. No luggage. May never see their home country again. They risk it all for freedom. Let America be a nation that welcomes them. Feeds them. Clothes them. THREAD
We are a nation that honors their grit. That same grit that gives these Afghans the courage to do what they are doing is the grit that strengthens America. Many of our parents, grandparents, and others came to America with that same grit after wars, disasters, and hardship. 2/11
Many of your families, like my parents, came to America with no money and no support network. My parents still remember the Americans who gave them a hand, helped them in their time of need. Now we must pay it forward. 3/11
I am getting lots of inquiries from people in Afghanistan or people who know those trying to get to safety. I am compiling names to try and push for evacuation. I cannot promise anything but will do everything I can. Email RepKimEvac@mail.house.gov
Here are more resources: THREAD
AMERICAN CITIZENS: If you or someone you know is an American in Afghanistan that wants to get out, have them fill out the form below. They can also email RepKimEvac@mail.house.gov or call my office at (202) 225-4765 if we can help follow up and push.
SIV: If you/someone you know has an approved petition for a Special Immigrant Visa, email NVCSIV@state.gov or call 1-603-334-0828. For those with/without approved petitions, email my congressional office so we can try and push for an urgent evac. RepKimEvac@mail.house.gov 3/10
I continue to struggle finding the words to describe the tragedy in Afghanistan. I’ve spent most of the last few days trying to get Afghans that I know out of the country. Their pleas are raw and cannot be ignored. I know full well that some might not make it. (THREAD)
The immediate question on many of our minds is how did we get here? I have many thoughts on that, but first let’s focus on saving as many lives as possible in the next few days and weeks. Let’s remember that those most in harm’s way are Afghans fighting for their lives. 2/11
Thousands of Afghans who worked alongside Americans for the last 20 years are at great risk. We can help them. We can set aside the bureaucracy that has backlogged their visa applications for years and just get them out of danger. We have to prioritize them. 3/11
