What's happening in #fairycreek right now is absolutely unconscionable. These actions are a deliberate choice in the interest of profit over people, planet and Indigenous jurisdiction. I cannot stand behind this.
This is a shameful abuse of power, a militarization of the police against one of the main things that strengthens democracy - civil disobedience.
With critical inaction on the #ClimateCrisis and justice for Indigenous peoples, and when leadership chooses not to act, it's PEOPLE who take up responsibility for what's important. There are Indigenous youth fighting this fight for our collective future.
And then battlegrounds like fairy creek become places where leadership is forced to make choices. Key choices about our future. And this violence, this abuse of elders and young people, is the choice they have made.
I am running for office to join this party at the federal level. I believe in the core ideals of this party. I do not believe that these actions are in line with those values. They are not in line with my vision for a climate safe future.
The BC government commissioned a panel on Old Growth in 2017 and then committed to its recommendations. One of the guiding principles of this panel report is to "Foster a paradigm shift". The BC NDP committed to this, & I stand behind that. It was good leadership and very needed.
There are lots of issues with the timelines and implementation of this report, but it was very much a strong and important piece of action on Old Growth forests, and could be a game-changer.
It's so important for us to engage our leadership, hold them to account, and collectively help our government make good choices. Tonight, Indigenous youth did that for us, and they are paying too high a price.
