Some good news on the #greenwoodfire in NE Minn. Latest estimate from thermal imaging camera is 8,862 acres, meaning it didn't grow in last 24hrs. Clark McCreedy with the interagency incident mgmt team tells @MPRnews higher humidity, lower temps, cloud cover are helping.
McCreedy also says local volunteer fire departments really stepped up to protect cabins & homes along Hwy 2 as the fire spread. No injuries reported & no buildings burned.
Also good news on the John Ek & Whelp fires in the BWCA. Sarah Shapiro with the U.S. Forest Service tells @MPRnews that John Ek is at 727 acres (down from 1500 Sat) based on better info from thermal cameras. Whelp remains at 50 acres. Weather is cooperating.
BWCA is closed to campers. USFS rangers are paddling in to inform people. Fires not a major danger for most campers, but all emergency resources needed for fighting fires & can't be diverted to rescue people who get into trouble in some other way.
