🧵 This will be my thread for tonight’s #NewDemoChat 🍊

Q1. Here in the North, we’re like the canary in the coal mine when it comes to climate change. We’ve been seeing it’s effects for years and frankly, it’s terrifying.
We as Inuit are people of the ice and snow and so much of who we are depends on it: our traditions, our knowledge, our culture, our food ways, and more!

Climate change is forcing us to adapt and it’s impacting food security, transportation, health...

cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…
Like my pal @PJC_NL says: I want to teach my grandchildren how to ice fish, as I have, as my ancestors have before me

Will I get this chance? I legitimately don’t know

That haunts me, but it drives me to press for real climate solutions. To protect my traditions and culture.
Obligatory ice fishing picture 😅 🎣

The love I have for my home, my people, our traditions, the land, all the creatures on this planet... that is what motivates me to take the climate crisis seriously.

We need to make some serious changes to protect our home on this Earth. Amy is standing on the ice, smiling, wearing a warm yellow t
Immediately end all subsidies to fossil fuel companies

No new fossil fuel expansion/exploration #KeepItInTheGround

Ensure our workers have a truly just transition, with supports to develop clean energy and good long-term jobs that aren’t dependent on a boom/bust cycle
(sorry it got busy at work... still working as a pharmacy assistant yall. Will resume thread shortly)
Whooooo boy. Let’s begin this one with some context:

I’m a proud Inuk woman and a land protector. I have been involved with @protectlabrador @resistmegadams and @GrandLabrador for years in the resistance to Muskrat Falls, the massive mega dam upstream from my hometown
In 2016 I was charged for resisting the harmful mega dam. Over 50+ of us land protectors who were dragged through the courts for nearly four years.

In 2019 I was arrested on Parliament Hill for trying to deliver a petition to then environment minister Catherine McKenna. Amy speaks into a microphone while holding a protest sign th
So when @NewDemoChat asks how to support Indigenous land defenders, I’m replying with first hand knowledge.

1. Donate to legal funds! Lawyers are so expensive. Even with reduced fees, being dragged through courts for four years was EXPENSIVE!! If you have the means, donate!!
2. Donate to the frontlines! Food, tents, $$$, signs, whatever they need.

3. Show up in person. Indigenous peeps are overcriminalized for protecting our planet. If you can put yourself between us and the police, do it.

4. Learn non-violent civil disobedience tactics.
5. Signal boost as much as you can on social media. It doesn’t feel like much, but putting pressure on elected officials WORKS.

6. Get to know whose land you’re on. Develop a relationship. And help each other out. So if/when the time comes, you have each other’s back.
Climate Justice means nothing without Indigenous sovereignty. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: you cannot untangle one from the other.

To truly address the climate emergency, we need to properly honour the first peoples of these lands.
Give the #LandBack. Honour the treaties. Respect indigenous sovereignty. Recognize our stewardship and let us lead the way.

That’s how we repair our relationship with this earth. That’s how we correct the dangerous extractive trajectory we’re on.
Biggest for me is that we’re committed to actually implementing Free Prior and Informed Consent for all Indigenous communities and Nations impacted by any government decisions.

Lib and Con govts might pay lip service but their “consultations” are shallow and often ignored.
In my district, I look to projects like the solar powered arena in Makkovik and the wind energy project in Nain

Across these lands, I look to the great work of @Indigenous_ca and @IndigClnEnergy, the 20/20 catalyst program, and more!
But even moreso, I look to the frontlines; The land defenders doing the work RIGHT NOW to stop harmful resource extraction

At Fairy Creek, 1492 Land Back Lane, resisting Alton Gas, the Nuluujaat Land Guardians, & so many more...

✊ true climate leadership #Solidarity
This has been fun!! Love a good #NewDemoChat. Looking forward to the next one. Nakummek for reading 🧡
