Folk film seems temporarily stuck in a rut of navel-gazing as of late. I think it’s because of newer filmmakers being inspired by surface elements of others’ work. I mean this all with zero shade, just an observation. Aim higher and be inspired on a deeper level
If it’s gonna be about nothing, at least make it beautiful.

If the conversations are gonna be natural, at least make them meaningful.

Etc.

I’m saying what others are thinking but not saying 🤷‍♂️
When you watch something and it’s great and feels natural and like it just sort of came together naturally and easily, realize that youre usually just not able to see the strings. Either it was more work than you think, or the artist put more time in to get to that skill level
When i look at @DAN_LOTZ’s Pure Cinema, i see the artistry and craft, as a fellow magician. To the uninitiated he just turned a camera on, talked on a phone. Yall fell for the magic trick. Thats beautiful. But go try and do what he did and see you dont know how the trick was done

for a lot of people covid isnt covid—its mortality. it's not so much a war on covid as it is a war on mortality. this lines up perfectly with the futurist dystopian shit we all know the elites are heading us towards. can't 'die' if you're digital
of course this is all a canard. we see shit disappear digitally left and right all the time. one click and it, or you, is gone. they don't want to create immortality, they want to create god and cast themselves as the lord
'immortality for me and not for thee' pretty much. the ultimate wealth, the ultimate riches. they get to press the button to determine who and what is allowed to live forever. that's the paradigm this is all headed towards—they talk about and research it extensively

What I think is confusing people about DONDA, leading to mixed reviews, is that it's a fucking tome. There's no other way to slice it—it's impossible to slice through this thing entirely overnight. If it ever comes out on CD, the case should weigh as much as an 800-page hardcover
I honestly think the ultimate thesis of DONDA—a complex, long work—could be his recognition that the death of his mother, and love for his mother, looms over every possible thought/opinion he could ever have about anything. That love guides his principles more than religion even
I knew DONDA would make me cry the moment I saw that there would be a song titled 'No Child Left Behind'. I saw exactly what he was doing, taking that Bush-era buzzword-y failed program and reapplying the words to losing your mother. As someone whose mom has passed, I felt it.

Been catching up on shark movies while making my new film NO SHARK 🚫🦈, so here's a thread of shark movies I've watched recently:
1) HOUSE SHARK (2017)
Charming moments, including an impressive and creative underwater sequence! Not all of the film lands (I'd cut a good 40 minutes from it) but I appreciate its overall silliness and uniqueness. Image
2) RAIDERS OF THE LOST SHARK (2015)
I liked this way more than I thought I would. It's a breezy ~60 minutes without credits, and only a few scenes drag, which is nice. Don't expect anything Indiana Jones—it's that in name only. Loved the scene with the quebecois couple. Image

This is kind of hilarious—morons who don't even know who I am are trying to 'cancel' me for my anti-SAG stance. They all are assuming I'm some big filmmaker exploiting 'workers' or whatever. When I explain that I make films with my friends, they think 'friends' is a cult term! 😂
I shouldn't laugh, but it's ridiculous how out of touch people are with how films can be made these days. The literal phenomenon of you and your friends (actual friends!) getting together with a camera and making something is a valid way to make art. No one is being exploited.
When you work with SAG, all of that goes away, including your freedom. Any filmmakers starting out should not work with that Hollywood system—that is not independence. Work with non-union actors only, and make films that are easy to make. Beautiful, but easy.

TMDB's evil actions have shown that, if you touch a camera because you want to—not because someone let you—you have a target on your back. Powerful people—and people who wish to suck up to them—want to erase you from film history as quickly as you are entering it. FUCK THEM!
YOU ARE A FILMMAKER. Not only that, independent film has only JUST BEGUN. It is not well-trod territory, it was not invented with Slacker and Clerks and all that, or even way before that—it is being truly, fully, finally realized NOW. That is why these bastards want to crush you.
I can go out to whatever beaches I want, and I can go there with beautiful babes and no shark at all and a great lens, and I can make NO SHARK, one of the greatest existential horror movies ever made. I know this because I JUST DID IT. MAKE YOUR FUCKING 'NO SHARK'. FUCK TMDB.

TMDB (the most corrupt film database in existence, which Letterboxd grabs its data from) now says that films that are released on AMAZON PRIME VIDEO are 'amateur' and subject to deletion/ban. This is transparently vindictive. They hate us and want to erase us from film history. Image
Why should this one dumb website get to dictate what YOU get to rate/review on Letterboxd? Unreal. @letterboxd should be ashamed. TMDB is not a serious film database—it has a clear pro-Hollywood anti-independent agenda. It wants you to only be able to review/rate Hollywood films.
THIS MATTERS BIG TIME. @letterboxd is the preeminent social media platform for rating / reviewing / discussing films. It is been cannibalized from within such that no more discussion will be able to be had about independent films. This is by TMDB's design, and this is SHAMEFUL!
