We have published new data looking at suicide deaths that occurred in the early months of the #coronavirus pandemic (April to July 2020) ow.ly/htLm50G2RI9
1,603 suicides occurred between April and July 2020 in England and Wales (9.2 deaths per 100,000 people).
This rate is statistically significantly lower than the same period in the previous three years ow.ly/E6eP50G2RTH
The lower suicide rate was primarily driven by a decrease in males, while in females there was no statistically significant difference from earlier years:
▪️ males: 13.9 per 100,000
▪️ females: 4.7 deaths per 100,000
Between April and July 2020, age-specific suicide rates statistically significantly decreased for those aged 10 to 24 years and 25 to 44 years compared with the same period in 2019 ow.ly/ih4T50G2RYu
Today’s statistics are consistent with other research on suicide during the pandemic, and the findings are unlikely to be explained by death registration delays ow.ly/ih4T50G2RYu
