This week our middle schoolers started in-person school w/2 half days to introduce the year. On day 2, I sent our 7th grader in to his classes (~25min) with our @AranetIoT CO2 monitor in the mesh side pocket of his backpack. RESULTS ⬇️ #CovidCO2#deltaschoolsairborne
This was the whole half-day. I asked him where he was at different times & sounds like the peaks occurred when he was in classrooms (we visited & they are SMALL for 15+ students) #COVIDisAirborne
He says the drops were when he was in the hallway. When the school was open for visiting, we got low CO2 levels in the hallways (open concept), but even when we talked to a teacher in his room (only 4 of us) it started to increase up to the 900 level…
The big peak (>2000!) at the end happened during advisory, where they played a game (cahoot) and everyone was talking. There is a face covering policy. There is also an AeraMax in each room, but kids say they can’t hear it so likely running on “quiet” mode AKA not full speed.
Now that I know I can trust our 7th grader with not breaking our CO2 monitor 😄 I’ll send him back for the full day w/50 min classes & lunch.
The best part: he was so interested he asked if he could take the monitor to his other household to see their CO2 levels ❤️

Wonderful new podcast by @CIDRAP, giving you an inside look at what my @PublicHealthUMN class w/Dr. Osterholm is like! Highly recommend the listen! Key points from ep 1 on #COVIDー19#COVID19:
Thread 1/10
1: @mtosterholm debunks the seasonality premise. Typical in disease outbreaks to see peak infections after 6mo, this is time to understand transmission & take action. Nothing to do w/seasonality or temp, example of active MERS transmission in Arabian desert
2/10
2: Must consider long-term plans. Something between full lockdown vs no action. Find middle ground, minimize exposure in most vulnerable pop, allow transmission in less vulnerable pop b/c less severe outcomes, they become immune & continue to work in society/care for others
