What is the worst between these two: IMPUNITY and CORRUPTION?
Impunity: Exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action.
Corruption: Dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery, theft, abuse of power.
THREAD.
For the past 10 years, I have fought both impunity and corruption without fear or favour. @Rein_Asamo and @codida can attest to this. But unfortunately, things have gotten worse instead of better. The good guys aren’t winning that much. The bad guys seem to own the country.
After discussing with @nderi_j on what is worse. Open theft of resources or the ability to break and disregard the law without any consequence with wanton abuse of power, it hit me that IMPUNITY is the most dangerous thing that this GOK has nurtured more than CORRUPTION.
The fact that this GOK has ensured the RULE OF LAW has become useless, this has resulted in a negative impact that few of us are willing to admit. The IMPUNITY of everyone coz since the bosses are breaking the law, why can’t we do the same? If caught, the best lawyers are there.
Disregard to Court Orders from the painful experience of @MigunaMiguna to the refusal of @StateHouseKenya to appoint the 6 Judges to complete disregard of orders by @InteriorKE has given birth to a lawless society where those connected call the shots & the weak are killed.
My argument with @nderi_j opened my eyes to look at the two issues broadly, I read and researched & even used my own life as an example and my goodness, @nderi_j was right. Open theft can be addressed with one executive order. Impunity cannot. Impunity is another monster.
Corruption is easier to deal with. What we lack is the political will. Because those involved with corruption & corrupting our National institutions are connected to politicians or are politicians hence ‘above the law’. Add disregard of law & order & your have a broken society.
For the past 10 years myself & @Kvaati@kuirab@mmnjug@codida@nderi_j@SeweS_ have been sound board to each other as we push our lives forward, discussing the economy & what is really eating at it & why life is becoming unbearable. They have sharpened my wit on analysis.
This is why I say IMPUNITY is worse & most dangerous than CORRUPTION. Here is why:
1. A boda guy rides on the wrong, causes an accident , they converge on you like a swarm of bees and burn you to death yet they are wrong & you a right. @FredMatiangi & his people do nothing.
2. A boda is used by robbers to rob you, maim you & they get away. You complain, @FredMatiangi & his people do nothing. Because you are no one important. Who is your mother and father? Are they important? No. Life moves on.
3. A boda rides on a pedestrian walk way, hits you, kills you & takes off. His mates protect him. Your family reports to the @NPSC_KE yet @FredMatiangi & his people do nothing about the boda boda menace. Life moves on. No justice for you & thousand of others because of Boda’s.
4.A cart pusher pushes his mkokoteni against traffic. Causing major traffic. When u ask him to do the right thing. He uses his ‘poverty’ aspect as a shield against ur request for him to obey traffic laws.Cops 👮♂️ nearby watch & do nothing. Simply feeding the monsters of impunity
5. Impunity is simply every Kenyan breaking small, irrelevant laws at their wanton desire because they feel they are poor or too rich to be held accountable. Yet you as the abiding law citizen are the one who suffers the consequences of these two sets of action @bonifacemwangi
6. You get arrested & since you feel you are too important, you bribe the @PoliceKE & get away with it, saying how you are a mheshimiwa. Yet without hindsight you are feeding the monster of impunity. Then you come online & demand that @StateHouseKenya sorts out corruption
Yet you on a personal level, cannot address the issue of corruption within your preview. Instead of bribing the @PoliceKE 5000 KES on a traffic issue, why not go to court & pay 💰 1000 that will go into national building, uphold the rule of law & deny impunity any oxygen BUT NOOO
Because of your false sense of importance, you corrupted the @PoliceKE , you have fed impunity, you have broken the rule of law & ultimately lost the moral authority to ask President Uhuru @StateHouseKenya to deal with corruption.
Those in power know that the collective masses are very corrupt & hence have no moral authority to demand any action on their part to stop 🛑 corruption or even arrest those in charge of it. We are first & foremost to blame. We the people. We the public.
7. You building a house 🏡 & instead of paying the right permit fees, say 16000 KES, you opt to pay 2000 to the enforcement agents to clear your building. 3 months later, it collapses, killing many in the process. Kinoo leaning house 🏡 a good example. Who is to blame? Is.
We have many houses that have collapsed across Nairobi’s area & no official or owner has been held to account, not because of corruption, but because of IMPUNITY. The lack of care to any consequence of their action. They believe they are above the law. They are important people.
7. It’s election time. We both know, bad politics leads to a miserable life. Why we refuse to connect this, will always baffle me. Instead of demanding better from these corrupt leadership, we are letting them bribe us with KES 527 to say why they are the best to lead again
That bribery is the reason why the political class has a choke hold on us. They bribe us every election cycle and that gives them the moral authority to steal from public coffers to replace what they used to bribe us with & the cycle continues. But do we care? @bonifacemwangi
9. Someone rapes your daughter. You go to the cops. He bribes the cops. You miss out on justice. Come election time, you forget what he did to your daughter, you say that’s ‘Mtu’ wetu, you vote for him to be President to rape the Constitution even worse & rob from you.
10. A doctor kills your classmate due to negligence. They bribe. You refuse to demand better because it’s not you. Next time you hear your sister has died, from the same doctor, you start demanding justice & no one cares because you never cared in the first place @bonifacemwangi
Impunity has birthed a society that has no regard to the rule of law & this has made anyone who can use their poverty or wealth to their advantage to break the law at their wanton will with their conscience disconnected from the consequences of JUSTICE @bonifacemwangi@Rein_Asamo
This alone is more dangerous & more Potent than corruption will ever be. Impunity is the lifeline of corruption. Impunity feeds corruption. Impunity crossed the road first. But we are disconnected from the reality of connecting dots together to get the real picture @KoinangeJeff
11. You take a Matatu. You took it coz they said your destination is KES 20. Inside the matatu they demand KES 50. You say no. You try to argue, they throw you out whilst it’s moving, you die. Their is public outcry. The matatu belongs to the OCS of your area. No justice.
The matatu is back on the road in a week. People have moved onto the next hot gossip of @JulianiKenya Mutua & Lillian. We have the attention span of Dory, the fish.
12. Your favorite MP shoots someone on live camera & he walks free. In fact you demand that he vies for Senator. He is in charge of crafting laws that he knows have no meaning to him but you & you alone. He believes he is above the law & you love him more. You are the problem.
13. Your favorite singer talks of ‘matapeli’ he cries on National TV & you make him MP. He kills someone with his Range Rover. His girlfriend kills someone. They bribe with KES 40k & you demand he releases another hit song. You come to realize the dead people are related to you.
You feed their impunity to be more corrupt by refusing to demand better. They have corrupted the very house that gives birth to laws. Laws that make us equal before the scales of JUSTICE ⚖️ irrespective of our social status. You are the problem.
14. Your favorite Tanga Tanga MP kills someone in public with her gun & you cheer her as she mocks the law in the same funeral of the person she killed & you demand of her to be the Governor of Kilifi. You come to realize the killed person was your father. You are the problem.
She believes the laws that she makes and passes do not apply to her. But only apply to you and me. You refuse to demand better. You beg for her attention to give you KES 50 that she stole from the public coffers.
15. He has been in charge of the government for a good 6 years. Too much about what has been stolen. You opt to say he is the savior for us from this grave that he dug for us. You are wowed by the monies donated. You go to hosp, there are no drugs. You die. The money for drugs?
Was given to you and your village mates at KES 50 and you said he is fit to be President but now you are dead because there are no funds to buy meds.
We have fed impunity with our small small acts of corruption to an extend that we have no moral authority to call anyone a thief. We are all thieves. We are all corrupt. We are all to blame. I prefer the open thief coz the law can deal with him. The one who disregards the rule…
…of law is worse and more dangerous. The RULE OF LAW is the balance between evil and good. It’s the stopper that prevents evil from taking over. It’s the guiding principle on rules of engagement. Without which a society is lost and broken. This GOK will be remembered for this.
This GOK will be remembered for feeding IMPUNITY over the essence of JUSTICE. That’s the legacy that we will remember for a very long time. @nderi_j you were right. Theft is better compared to making a mockery of the rule of law & court orders.
