"Sacred sites lack specific and enforceable protections”: Indigenous people face legal barriers that hinder the protection of sacred sites
Such important reporting by @DebKrol. Essential reading. Photos by @photoevans

Across the Southwest, Native peoples continue to fight legal barriers and bureaucratic obstacles. “Their long-held spiritual ties to the land have been broken by laws, redrawn boundaries and the regulations that open public lands to profitable uses.” azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…
"The callous destruction of Indigenous sacred sites is not just a troubling relic of the past." As recently as 2020, the federal government blew up Apache burial sites to clear the land for the border wall.
azcentral.com/in-depth/news/… @Debkrol
In 2018, a federal court ruled that a Native burial ground and stone altar still used for religious ceremonies could be bulldozed "merely to expand a road." azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…
"We call them the sleeping giants": Near the Colorado River, tribes faces challenges in protecting these ancient geoglyphs.

"Oak Flat is sacred." A place of prayer faces obliteration by a copper mine. The company plans to use a new method called block cave mining, which would leave a giant sinkhole. azcentral.com/in-depth/news/… By @Debkrol Photos by @photoevans
A new freeway left cultural sites in ruins:
"The demolition of 33 acres of desert peak represented the loss of an old connection, a desecration of a place that O'odham and Pee Posh peoples called sacred." Native people fought their cause in court but lost. azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…
'A spiritual relationship': At the San Francisco Peaks, tribes have fought for decades to prevent desecration of the forests, springs, meadows and summits azcentral.com/in-depth/news/… @Debkrol @photoevans
It's shown on maps as Mt. Graham. But the Apache know it as Dził Nchaa Si An (Big Seated Mountain). They say this sacred place was stolen, then defiled with the building of an observatory. Now they must obtain a permit to hold ceremonies in the forest. azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…

Struggling with the drying climate, a Hopi farmer works to sustain his people’s ancient traditions of growing corn azcentral.com/story/news/loc… @DavidWallce
“Are we going to run out of corn?” A Hopi farmer is determined to continue growing corn the traditional way, relying on the rains. But this year, the soil was so dry that he and others had no corn to harvest. azcentral.com/story/news/loc… @azcentral
Last year @DavidWallce and I reported on the growing season as Hopi farmers watched their corn wither during one of the hottest summers on record. At harvest time, many plants were knee-high. Some shriveled and produced no corn. This year was even worse. azcentral.com/in-depth/news/…

Breaking: The federal government has declared a shortage on the Colorado River for the first time, announcing mandatory water cutbacks next year that will affect Arizona, Nevada and Mexico.

Story coming w/ @zaynasyed_ via @azcenvironment
Here's where things stand. Lake Mead, the largest reservoir at the country, has declined to its lowest levels since it was filled in the 1930s following the construction of Hoover Dam. Based on the reservoir level, the Lower Basin will be in a tier-one shortage in 2022.
Arizona Dept. of Water Resources Director Tom Buschatzke says based on the latest projections, representatives of AZ, CA and NV have begun to meet to discuss additional steps. "This is a serious turn of events but not a crisis."

'Damn the status quo': At Hoover Dam, a new coalition calls for stopping plans for new diversions of water from the depleted Colorado River azcentral.com/story/news/loc… By @antonldelgado & me

Members of the coalition condemned plans for Utah's Lake Powell Pipeline. “While the Lower Basin is going on a diet of cutting its water use, we should not let the Upper Basin go on an all-you-can-eat buffet.” azcentral.com/story/news/loc… @antonldelgado #ColoradoRiver
.@KyleRoerink1: "This is a strange bedfellows coalition. We’ve got farmers. We’ve got enviros. We’ve got businesses. We’re the type of coalition that they say can’t be put together. But we’re here to say, damn the status quo. No more business as usual." azcentral.com/story/news/loc…

In the meantime, here's our recent story about the rapidly declining water levels at Lake Mead, where they're moving marinas and extending boat ramps along the shifting shorelines.
