In 2020, there were 5,224 suicides registered in England and Wales.

Accounting for the age structure of the population, the mortality rate was 10.0 deaths per 100,000 population, significantly lower than 2019 ow.ly/PT3t50G5hmE

The decrease in suicide registrations in 2020 is likely to be driven by two factors

▪️ a decrease in male suicides at the start of the #coronavirus pandemic
▪️ delays in death registrations because of the pandemic

Around three-quarters of registered suicides in 2020 were among men (3,925 deaths).

This follows a trend seen since the mid-1990s ow.ly/Rk7X50G5hsW

In England and Wales, the 2020 male suicide rate of 15.4 deaths per 100,000 was lower than in 2019, but in line with years before that.

For females, the 2020 suicide rate was 4.9 deaths per 100,000, consistent with the past decade ow.ly/tXkp50G5huW

Males and females aged 45 to 49 years had the highest age-specific suicide rate

For the fifth consecutive year, London had the lowest rate of any region of England in 2020 (7.0 deaths per 100,000).

The highest rate was in the North East, with 13.3 deaths per 100,000 ow.ly/aLbh50G5hC5

There were 8,797 deaths in England and Wales registered in the week ending 3 Sept 2021 (Week 35).

Affected by the Summer Bank Holiday, this was 1,471 fewer deaths than the previous week and 6.7% above the five-year average ow.ly/e14t50G9t5D

Of the deaths registered in the week ending 3 Sept 2021 in England & Wales, 659 mentioned #COVID19 on the death certificate (7.5% of all deaths).

This is a decrease compared with the previous week (668 deaths) ow.ly/9ZJK50G9t7K

The number of deaths involving #COVID19 in England decreased to 632 in the week ending 3 Sept 2021 (Week 35), compared with 649 in the previous week.

For Wales, deaths involving COVID-19 increased to 25 in Week 35 compared with 16 in the previous week ow.ly/E3od50G9t9m

A ‘breakthrough death’ is a death involving #COVID19 that occurred in someone who'd received both vaccines, and had a first positive PCR test at least 14 days after the second vaccination dose.
