The overall substance of this thread is people are shitty to rural Americans. That I made a joke and one of the tweets does not take away from that, and then I bought 17 acres of land in a town you don’t know about doesn’t mean I want the benefits of urban life in a rural area.
Internet and a paved road are not benefits. They are basic things. Rural communities should be able to have this and live in more expensive areas if they choose to, that doesn’t mean they are demanding all urban amenities. I don’t want a mall. I want internet.
This is frankly the dumbest, most academically unsound thing I have ever read. There are absolutely ways to bring fresh produce to rural America.
And I think this tweet magnifies my entire point. You think we’re all Americans are asking for all of these urban amenities, but what are they asking for? Internet. Paved roads. Regular trash disposal. Are you kidding me?
This person found and screenshot a tweet celebrating my land purchase last year, determining that my points are invalid bc I chose to buy land there. Right now all I have on that land is a little cabin. These things don’t affect me on a daily basis, and that is a privilege I have
That one day I would like to live in a place with fewer people does not invalidate my need for social services. You don’t have to be structurally impoverished and stuck in rural America to be able to complain about the lack of access to resources for the people there.
And frankly, the callousness with which this person dismissed points simply because I chose to live among the few were people proves my entire point about rural America. They are not fucking aliens.
This is just a false reading of everything I said. I mentioned public transportation as an example of some thing that these communities do not have, I did not say that we should put a bus route in Oakwood. A paved road, however, would be pretty fucking nice.
And this is just the perfect tweet that shows everything wrong with the way that we look at policy and rural and sparsely populated communities. We can build an interstate highway system under Eisenhower, but I guess broadband and roads are ice in hell.
The federal government spends billions of dollars a year producing weaponry we never use to falsely boost manufacturing jobs in powerful congressional districts. Don’t tell me we can do that and then tell me that providing basic aid to rural America is impossible.

Y’all blame rural America for things white politicians who represent suburbs do and it’s becoming clear no one knows what “rural” means.
For a lot of people “rural america” has just become a catch all term for white politicians mostly in the south, but rural America isn’t just a bunch of white republicans. There are rural communities in every state, with diverse populations (even if not always well integrated).
These places are culturally, economically and certainly racially diverse, and like all things people don’t see with their own eyes, it has become a verbal meme we throw around. It’s ignorant, and it makes me mad.
Thefriendlystatenews.com has been launched for less than 24 hours and I’ve already got more than 100 freelancers signed up for a Saturday public records training, and one (sponsored!) student training and one local newsroom training booked.
I did this because I knew there was a massive need for affordable, accessible investigative training and y’all I am floored. I am so happy. My heart is full. Thank you for trusting me with your time and your money - we are going to do some really cool shit.
I can only have 150 freelancers, max, in this because ya girl isn’t a millionaire with super premium video conferencing so if it fills up, I’ll do a second one.
I feel this way right now even tho I want kids some day! I don’t think this is a weird sentiment, even tho it’s gotten a lot of pushback. I like my little independent life with my dog! I can do whatever I want!
My friends with kids are also living their best lives, and one day that’ll be right for me too, but right now not having kids is pretty great!
Shout out to kids, who are way better than adults and are fun to hang out with but who I don’t want to be responsible for in any way at this time. Thank you.
listen, as a texas lady, i would just like to talk to the woman who thinks that texans actually wear fringed red cowboy boots with dresses for occasions such as this.
no one does this. we are not ted from how i met your mother.
Anyone know of a non-profit that wants to be a fiscal sponsor for The Friendly State News so we can accept donations to do free trainings? Please let me know! jessica@thefriendlystatenews.com.
Lots of you have asked to donate! And you can! But we are a lil bebe company, and you'll directly pay for a training (with receipts!) but you can't deduct it on your taxes.
We are doing our best.
If you want to sponsor a training anyway, email isabella@thefriendlystatenews.com.
AND WHILE I HAVE YOU HERE. Are you a freelancer? Do you just want to learn how to file a public records request? Do you lack hundreds of dollars to spend learning how?
