Hello #ATTwitter I present to you my first Industrial AT Tweetorial. We will explore industrial AT settings. Is it boring? Maybe, but a lot of people only imagine Amazon or NASA when they think about industrial ATs but actually, we have about as many options as there are sports.
MANUFACTURING - Making up 8.5% of the workforce the manufacturers pump out goods day and night. ATs will find themselves flexing ergonomic skills, combating chronic/repetitive injuries, triaging acute injury & illness, and responding to medical emergencies at their facility.
Manufacturing ATs must know and understand every single process in the plant along with the common injuries that result from certain processes & machines.

Examples: Toyota, Ford, Dell, Boeing, Volvo, Unilever, Estee Lauder, Ashley Furniture, Sony, Nissan
AERONAUTICS - Not to be confused w/ the manufacturing side of aronautics, athletic trainers in this setting work to keep astronauts mission ready. Injury rehabilitation & mitigation, health promotion, and research are great strengths to bring.

Examples: NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin
FULFILLMENT/SHIPPING - As online commerce continues to explode these employees need ATs more than ever. Handling packages at breakneck speeds, acute injuries are common along with exertional heat illness as these hubs are often not climate controlled.

Examples: Fedex, UPS, USPS
DISTRIBUTION - Similar elements in the fulfillment industry except there's a bit more control over the volume. Besides warehouse employees, at least half of your population works at accounts in the market & most injuries will happen out there.

Examples: Pepsi, Frito Lay, Sysco
CONSTRUCTION/UTILITIES - Constantly exposed to the elements and heights, ATs in this environment set the tone with their team. Being able to develop relationships at lightning speed is also critical b/c these guys are often short on time.

Examples: FPL, Messer, Pacific G&E
FOOD PROCESSING/PACKAGING - ATs in these settings may get to smell delicious food all day, or raw meat... While caring for employees who work extremely close together and have to adhere to strict sanitary standards.

Examples: Blue Diamond, Tysons, Kings Hawaiian
BEVERAGE PROCESSING/PACKAGING - Similar to food processing but beverages. I know a couple ATs in this setting but I'm actually pretty clueless about it.

Examples: Gatorade, Coca-Cola, Kendall Jackson, Coors
MINING/OIL & GAS - Risks extend well beyond MSK injury here. Getting caught by equipment, falls, electrocutions, chemical exposures, fires, explotions, etc. In addition to the typical AT toolbox, these ATs need to be regulation experts & staunch enforcers of best practices.
FISHING/WILDLIFE - I'm including ranchers, zoo keepers, and more in this pot. These ATs should be familiar with common illnesses/injuries from the animals these employees work with. Also the increased risk of drug & alcohol abuse in the commercial fishing population.
AGRICULTURE - Elements, elements, elements. Insect and animal bites. Dermatological disorders. Chronic/repetitive injuries. Exertional heat stress. The risks are confounded by the high imigrant population. Preventative care & health education can save so many lives here.
There are additional settings like outreach, retail, nuclear, etc but I can't think of much to elaborate on with those right now. But I hope someone learned something. I'll think of something more interesting next time.
Would love to know which of these settings anyone is in.
Settings I've had the honor of being in:
- automotive manufacturing
- steam utilities
- tire & rubber manufacturing
- shipping & fulfillment
- beer distribution
