The English leaders' debate is on! True North has you covered here:
This is the first and only English leaders' debate of the campaign. Moderator is Shachi Kurl, president of Angus Reid Institute.
"Please, answer the questions. Do not interrupt each other. I don't want to cut you off, but I will if I have to," Kurl tells leaders.
Kurl asks the evergreen question to an NDP leader: "How will you pay for all this?" Singh: "Billionaires should pay their fair share!" But of course.
Spicy question to Trudeau: Opposition parties have put the country above partisanship throughout the pandemic. Why can't you by not calling an election? Trudeau: There are "radically different" ideas from parties, so Canadians get to choose which to take forward.
Kurl asks Blanchet how he denies racism in Quebec but upholds Bill 21. Blanchet says it's "Not about discrimination" but rather "the values of Quebec."
Kurl's question to O'Toole summed up: You're fine but your caucus sucks. How do we know they won't be in charge if we elect you?
Annamie Paul thanks Celina Caesar-Chavannes, Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould for their leadership and independence.

"I won't take lessons on caucus management from you," Trudeau replies.
Is this speed dating or an election debate?
It looks like all the complaints about a lack of foreign policy theme for the debate were heard, as foreign policy questions get injected into the "leadership and accountability" section.
O'Toole hits Trudeau for "not showing up" to vote in House of Commons condemning Uighur genocide.
Trudeau says you don't get things done with China if you just "lob tomatoes across the Pacific...you need to engage in a sophisticated way with our allies." Is he calling China an ally?
Blanchet: Lobbing tomatoes might not be the solution but neither is doing nothing. Shots fired!
Trudeau says O'Toole can't be a strong leader with China because he can't convince his candidates to get vaccinated. No, that's not a mistranslation.
"You can't have a strong economy unless you tackle climate change," Trudeau tells O'Toole, before pointing out Conservative members voted against recognizing climate change as man-made at a policy convention.
Annamie Paul says former Independent MP Jody Wilson-Raybould and former NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq should be on the podium debating.
Blanchet is displeased this evening.
Did Trudeau just say he lifted 109 of 105 boil water advisories? Creative math.
Singh just said it's time to "stop the use of force" in policing. Um, what?
"How would you dismantle this broken, top-down system?" (Referring to the Indian Act).

Bizarre to ask a question presupposing they've all committed to doing such a thing when they haven't actually done that.
I feel like Blanchet is doing a Rorschach test here, where no matter what he's looking at he sees Quebec oppression.
Hypothetical question about supply management.

My presumption of Blanchet's answer: "Well, milk and Quebec are not dissimilar."
O'Toole says the Conservatives are the only party with a "recovery plan that includes all Canadians."
Trudeau accuses O'Toole of being "beholden" to the gun-lobby and anti-vaxxers. Moderator cuts him off as the question was about affordability.

BREAKING: Alberta Jason Kenney declares "state of public health emergency," predicting Alberta will run out of ICU beds in next 10 days. Kenney calls for three steps: Maximize healthcare capacity, reduce transmission by reducing interactions, increase vaccination.
"This is a crisis of the unvaccinated," Kenney says, saying 90 per cent of ICU COVID patients are unvaccinated.
Kenney says he doesn't seek to "stigmatize" people but says being unvaccinated has "real consequences" for society and healthcare system. Says Alberta is being hardest hit in Canada because of low vaccination rate.

At Edmonton’s Bowden Park for a rally @MaximeBernier and @peoplespca are holding. Supposed to be kicking off in about 15 minutes.
I’m terrible at crowd estimates but definitely hundreds of people here. A lot of young families. Not the standard rally demo for a Conservative event.
A group of supporters starts singing O Canada.

The English language leaders’ debate starts at 9:00pm here in Gatineau. People’s Party leader Maxime Bernier was not invited. PPC has organized a #letmaxspeak rally outside venue. Just started.
A combination of anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine passport signs throughout the crowd. I’m bad at crowd counting but I’d estimate a couple of hundred people here. Image
PPC candidate for Gatineau @MSPPCGatineau is emceeing. He begins by thanking police for their efforts.

In 2019, Justin Trudeau said Canada was engaged in genocide against Indigenous women and girls. Last night, he avoided a question about whether that's still the case. tnc.news/2021/09/09/jus…
His initial acceptance of the "genocide" claim was little more than political posturing, clearly. If Canada were actually committing genocide, there would be domestic (and international) legal obligations and responses that clearly weren't there.
Practically speaking, if you're the leader of a G-7 country committing genocide, you should have a hard time getting re-elected. But he can't say it's no longer the case, because nothing has substantively changed in Canada since then.

The first "official" debate of the 2021 election campaign is on, moderated by Patrice Roy, broadcasting live from the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. Five leaders were invited: Jagmeet Singh, Justin Trudeau, Erin O'Toole, Annamie Paul, and Yves-François Blanchet. #cdnpoli
In lieu of opening statements, Roy asks leaders if they will commit to not calling a snap election if they win (especially if a minority). Trudeau: No answer. O'Toole: Yes. Singh: No answer. Blanchet: Knows he won't win but wants to keep a government going. Paul: Yes.
First theme is "pandemic and healthcare." Question (from New Brunswick woman) is about long-term care conditions and COVID deaths. How will you ensure seniors aren't neglected?

At the first of two debates hosted by the government’s Leaders’ Debates Commission, in Gatineau. Leaders will soon be arriving to the Canadian Museum of History. Like at all government buildings since May, the flag remains at half mast. #cdnpoli Image
More security here compared to the debates at the same venue in 2019. For example, last time supporters were able to gather here across the lane way as the candidates’ buses arrived. This year, supporters (and protesters) are kept at the road, about 100 meters away. Image
