Because the Irmagin once nearly conquered the world, those most powerful of spellcasters are now bound to 5 irrevocable oaths, rules known as the Pentarex. #AppendixO
First, each Irmagin is bound to one of five Eldriseals, and that Irmagin's magics cannot affect anyone bearing it, or any structure linked to it.
Second, all Irmagin are required to be physically vulnerable, defined as--without magic--being unable to do all the things needed in a year to care for themselves. As a result, it is common for those with such limitations at birth to at least try their hand at the Unlimited Art.
Third, no two Irmagin may learn the same spells, and the list of all known spells, and which Irmagin knows each, must be kept accurate and chronicled with numerous lords and orders.
Fourth, each Irmagin is bound to a single commoner, a person of no great rank, wealth, or reach. What the boundserf feels, the Irmagin feels. But the Irmagin may not do anything to care for their boundserf they do not do freely for all.
Fifth, no Irmagin may extend the length of their life, or time on the mortal plane, though any means. No healing, no slowing of age, no passing their souls into vessels or becoming undead.
Despite these rules, Irmagin are fears, mistrusted... and in high demand.
